If they were doing this during a school day, with the students in school, then the answer would be yes. That's not what's happening. The students who participate all know it's a drill, and they're there by choice. Drills are part of emergency planning, and they have been for decades. Since we seem to have more and more school shooters all the time, this is part of our new reality.
Why would a parent expose their child to this intentionally? And yes, this was during a school day. If what you say is true, prove it. Have you seen the list of schools participating in the op?
The point of these mock drills using the real LEOs is for them to drill in realistic situations.
And they do NOT tell the victims what is going to happen beforehand because that removes the "realistic" from the drill.
Some of my neighboring school districts have chosen to go the route of a mock attack. Parents, police and sometimes the media are informed that something will go down, before hand. Some parents choose to keep their kids at home that day, fearing what better time for a real shooter to have at it.
Basically its not something that caused problems in the past. Being 65 I can well remember Duck and cover drills and air raid siren test weekly. My father talked about drill at the place he worked in case of attack. But then again people of the past mostly had served in the military as far as adults and knew that being prepared is always a good thing. Now days people rely too much on government coming to their rescue which is foolish as we have seen in disasters of those prepared ending up with best results unlike Katrina as a example.
Well I guess when you see Chinooks and Blackhawks circling your city with armed solders hanging out of them you won't bat an eye and take it all in stride. You'll get that warm and tingly feeling of "being safe".

the real terrorist are the ramped thugs killing robing and raping!!! the odds of being whacked by a terrorist are slim compared to getting whacked by a freaking low life thug..
reading through the article, it qappears most of these "drills" are taking place in what could be considered "gun free" zones; that is, areas where it can safely be assumed that the general populace is not armed.
I wonder why there have been no drills in small towns in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, etc. where it is a pretty safe bet the general populace is armed to the teeth?
Perhaps they think the populace might take the "aggressors" on before the "cops" can arrive?
They have done that as well in school during the school day.
No the students did not know what was happening.
They and their parents were just told "something" and made to sign waivers.
Heck cities don't even know when the drills are happening until their 911 system is flooded with calls from citizens describing helicopter attacks with gunshots in their neighborhoods.
You haven't read about that ? Is all this news to you ?
Teachers stage fake gunman attack - US news - Life | NBC News
Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.
..
During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on a locked door.
Whoever thought that was a good idea, and whoever participated in tricking the kids, needs to lose their jobs, because that's so stupid it's nearly unbelievable. In every emergency planning event that I've heard of, and if students are involved, they are recruited in advance to PLAY ROLES--they're told you're going to have this injury, or you're going to be running to this location. Everyone who participates absolutely knows it's a drill. The kids participate with parental permission, and the adults are emergency personnel or volunteers. In the events in the article the OP linked to, it was also clear from reading it that if students participated, they were given a role to play. They also had to know it was a drill.
To not get permission from the parents, and to convince the kids that the event is real, is inexcusable. Drills are an important way for emergency personnel to prepare for situations where there isn't a lot of room for error if they want to save lives. Hospitals have been doing triage drills in case of a mass accident or a weather emergency, right down to volunteer patients playing a role with specific injuries, for as long as I can remember. The key factor is that people need to know very clearly that it's a drill, and participate voluntarily.
