You want to blame a company for killing small "Mom and Pop" stores? Better hate stores like Kroger and The A&P first.

Better hate Sears, Lowe's, Forest City, Home Depot too.

Right, because Wal-Mart SHOULD own and operate ALL the warehouses in the supply chain. Then the Wal-Mart haters could complain about the monopoly that Wal-Mart had formed. Instead, LIKE EVERY OTHER RETAILER SINCE RETAIL HAS EXISTED, they hire companies to store and transport goods. Ooooh, the sin of it.

Walmart encourages workers to seek entitlements....they further do this by hiring extensively part time.

So they received subsidized labor....and they have no problem with it.

But keep b*tchin about people on the dole and how great your low prices are and what price they come at.

I saw this detailed in a movie. I will go out of my way to shop at local stores. Some people do not want careers. They get what they can out of working and when there is enough money to go to Montana that's what they do. "Careers are a 21st century invention." Chris Mcandless

My wife is close to retirement with one of Walmart' grocery stores and I like the way the Company extends to its associates, and spouses of associates, a 10% discount on food during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Food, with the exception of produce, is normally not discounted under the associate discount program. It certainly makes a difference in Texas where most groceries are also exempt from state sales tax.

Also, in light of all the continuing lies about Walmart, my wife makes a livable wage and has never been urged to apply for government assistance.

Lonepalmhc----Congratulations on laying the lie to the Demcorats and their union whores who've had a preposterous 'war against WalMart' for ages, and for no remotely intelligent reason.

Big-box retailers, including Target, Best Buy, Lowe's and others have saved their customers millions of dollars for years and years, and certainly don't need any job-killing entities such as unions to force them the lay off employees and raise their prices.

Plus it's never a sure thing that union members will automatically enjoy better benefits than their non-unionized counterparts; that's certainly the case out here in LA, as Whole Foods CEO John Mackey brilliantly pointed out in a WSJ editorial earlier this year.

This may answer some of your question:

Buying shoddily-made goods cheaper may be costing you more than you know due to the benefits that WM doesn't pay. Figure out how much you pay for food stamps and add it to the cost of what you buy.

How about a poll as whether your thread is either short sighted or a product of ignorance and tunnel vision?

Quote:
Researchers conclude that the probability of a local retailer going out of business during the study period was significantly higher for establishments close to Wal-Mart's location. The loss of jobs in the trade area near Wal-Mart just about balanced out any 'new' jobs attributable to Wal-Mart. "These estimates support the contention that urban Wal-Mart stores absorb retail sales from other city stores without significantly expanding the market," the researchers say.
