This has been a really interesting discussion, but I have to revert to my role as "Wal-Mart hater". So I will include this link so my fellow haters can have some ammunition to take down this evil empire.
Just wanted to see what the consensus is on all the jobs that Walmart provides Americans.
You failed to ask another key question: what kinds of jobs are they providing? Low paying jobs that the average person can't live on, while simultaneously running most of the other businesses out of town, doesn't look like a very rosy picture.

It dosnt , but lets face it, most employed there would not be employed at all if they didnt work there.
Walmart is a retailer, as long as there is demand other retailers would open stores to provide the service and employ people to work in those stores, because of Walmart's efficiency and economies of scale they can hire less people than would local competitors. Because of that, if Walmart went away there would actually be more jobs available. Of course that was not an option in your poll.

They can also have a lot more locations because of it, employing a lot more people. Other retailers would not be able to pay their employees more (and by and large don't pay that much more as it is), yet would (and do) charge more making it harder for the poor to afford many items.
Walmart going away would result in inflation and greater unemployment.

No. It would actually have a negative domino effect. Sure, other retailers would employ some of these people but they would not be able to employ all of them. These people would not be earning money and would not be able to spend money anywhere, costing a lot of jobs.

You are changing topics midstream. The OP, your OP, was about Jobs. Lets stick to that.
The fact is that for every two jobs that Walmart creates, three jobs are lost in the community. The reason was explained in my prior post.
The fact is that Walmart is bad for employment. Based on the stat above, if there were no Walmart stores there would be 700,000 more retail jobs available.
If they can't make "enough money to support themselves" working at Wal-Mart, then they should get a job someplace else. Why is that unreasonable?
Low wage jobs are supposed to be stepping stones to something more, too many people are unmotivated and want to have a "career" working at WalMart.
Before the education system went down the toilet, it was understood that you move up from jobs like that and don't turn them into a career lifestyle.
But not anymore. People want to work at Walmart and stay in the same job for 20 or 30 years and not improve themselves, but want to be paid as if they're not replaceable.

Wal-mart says that it is not just a job it is career.
