Does it make sense to you to demonize Islam because 16.8% of its adherents think that suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civilian targets are justified in order to defend Islam from its enemies if 16.8% of Christians think that targeting civilians is justified in defending Christianity?
Is it okay to "demonize" Islam because pretty much all majority Muslim nations are sexist, anti-Semitic, backwards, homophobic hellholes? Is it okay to "demonize" Islam because Muhammed married a nine year old? Because the Saudis don't let women drive? Because the Iranians put women in jail for showing their hair? Because the Jordanians have essentially legalized honor killings? Because in most of the Islam world freedom of religion is reserved for Muslims and Muslims only?
Let's stop acting as if there are no reasons to dislike Islam.

A better question would be "How many Christians think that suicide bombing and other forms of violence against civilian targets are justified in order to defend Christianity from its enemies?"

No they wouldn't "sit well", because they would be very high and I would find that depressing.
But as for the claim that it's improper to contrast Americans and Muslims, that's silly. The only thing "binding" American Catholics and American Muslims is nationality. If your point is that any group in which 16.8% support killing civilians is vile, what does it matter if you sort them by nation, religion, income or eye color? Vile is vile.
I don't like religion, but Roosevelt, Churchill and Hitler (and Stalin, Chiang, Mao, etc.) were not especially religious (although the first three used religion cynically) and look at the harm they all did.
