You're missing an important part of the story here which is the 2008 contest was between two candidates (or more) who had never been president. Today, one of the people in this race has been president and the 2012 election is a referendum on that president's record.

Fifteen months out Obama's numbers suck and are steadily trending downward. To win on election day he has to get that approval number back up to 52% at the very minimum. Bush II squeaked out the slimmest of victories against Kerry with a 52% Gallup approval rating on election day 2004, but in 2004 the economy was much better than it is today and we were only fighting two wars.

You are correct that fifteen months is a long time in politics, but it's also a long time to have not already begun to trend upward. If I see anything in Obama's numbers it's an acceleration of his negative trend, and I don't see from history any president except Truman having the sort of dramatic last minute turn around Obama would need to pull off a win.

LOL, I see you're parroting the liberal talking points. If throwing $1T at the economy didn't work at all other than adding significantly to our debt (thus ensuring our credit downgrade), then why on Earth would you propose doubling the failure? One enormous failure wasn't good enough, so you want to DOUBLE the size of the failure? WOW.

And a large chunk was tax cuts. Those are not as effective at stimulating the economy.

His agenda is DOA. There will be no more failed stimuli.

Ohhhhhhhh........He should seriously reconsider his luxury vaca - he's liable to get down around 30 with the images coming out of Ma's Vine.

Amazing, isn't it? Most of his supporters are absolutely clueless about what he's doing.

Only to say his approval, right now in the Gallup, would lose him the election.

They grasp the severity of his situation....they won't admit it though.

Yes, his only hope is the economy picking up...and all the forecasts say that won't happen.

If you disagree with his ruinous politics, why?

The speech was horrendous.

Remember, finger on the scale. They probably have the tracker so skewed towards democrats right now.

They would lose all credibility - isn't Gallup the gold standard for them?

Not a chance of that happening.
It will happen or Republicans can take the blame for cutting the military and Medicare.

Yeah, we should have given ALL the money to the teacher unions. THAT would have done the trick.

Reagan was only 5 points higher, but the news in August 1983 was businesses were hiring, inflation was falling and the economy was booming. He would go on to win a second term with a 60% approval rating and one of the most lop-sided electoral victories in our nation's history. Obama has only failed, and he has failed consistently by every measure imaginable. There is no upward Obama trend because there is no good news to drive such a trend.

Not to mention, the congressional approval rating sucked before Nov. 2010 too. You can't blame this solely on the Republicans.

The left said last month that gas prices were going to drop $.50. Still waiting for the impact from Obama releasing oil from the reserves are we?
