We helped arm Iran through the 1980's to try to overthrow Saddam..
Iraq Throughout the 1980s America sold weapons to both Iraq and Iran, but primarily to Iraq. Oliver North told the Iranians that America would support the Iranians in overthrowing Saddam Hussein. At the same time we were telling Saddam that we would support him in taking land in Iran.
So this leads me back to the question.. What do you do if #2 fails?
Not true. The US cut all ties with Iran in 1979. The only thing the US provided Iran during the 1980s was military intelligence on Iraq operations during the Iran/Iraq war. We also provided Iraq with military intelligence on Iranian operations. Reagan's goal was so that neither Iran nor Iraq would gain any ground in their war, and he was successful. The US provided no weapons to either Iran or Iraq during the 1980s.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to take this headline on Drudge Report and create a thread here.
Out of the following possibilities...
1- Ignore Gaddaffi's actions (Technically support Gaddaffi)
2- Weaken Gaddaffi's use of military over the rebels (Technically, support the rebellion)
3- Direct engage in war with the government in Libya
I support #2. What do you?
Mind our own business and stop interfering in the internal affairs on other nations.
"But “installing a democratic system†sounds an awful lot like the nation-building on which both Obama and Hillary heaped criticism while running for President in 2007-8."
Gee, I guess this isn't just a no fly zone. Perhaps this jack ass can finish his little vacat.... I mean tour in South America and come back home and explain things. Seems to me, he is as confused to what our purpose over there is, or he just doesn't want to be honest about it.
Sounds about right for our idiot boy president.
Now what about “installing a democratic system†for Darfur, Zimbabwe and Equatorial Africa? If Equatorial Africa makes you nervous there is a lot of oil there too. Kind of a bonus.
Enforcing a No Fly Zone requires firing missiles and such. How do you think it was done under HW Bush, and later under Clinton, in post-Gulf War Iraq (to protect civilians)? Did you see those as wars?
Ummm,no it doesn't.
You don't bomb the leader of another nations home to enforce a no fly zone.
You don't bomb power stations.
You don't bomb troops on the ground and armored vehicles.
In fact,in Iraq, the air defenses weren't targeted UNLESS they tracked or locked on to Allied aircraft.

According to The New York Times, the United States supplied the following arms to Iran:
I thought everyone knew about the Iran Contra affair..
