At this point in time the general public doesn't know what was or was not done regarding taking this guy's threads seriously. We don't know if he was ever evaluated by a mental health professional. We don't know if the sheriff ever talked to his parents about his behavior. We don't know if his parents took any warning sights seriously, or if they assured the sheriff that they would find him professional help, or not. We DO know that if every person who every posted something scary or threatening on the internet were arrested, the public outcry would not be on the side of law enforcement.
Unless you want to go back to forcing medical treatment upon people against their will what other choice do you have?
If someone is a danger, to themselves or to others, then yes, we force medical treatment on them. Are you going to argue that this guy wasn't a danger?

When did he become a danger?
Was he a danger in 2007?
In high school?

Maybe in college when fellow students complained to the administration about being afraid of him? Or when he had those five incidents with the campus police? Those certainly indicated someone who was losing control.

I know what you are saying, that even in light of his behavior that got him expelled from college, we should be wary of forcing mental healthcare on people. We are all different, and those differences should be valued. But a mental health assessment of this man, especially in light of his behavior, and of his general incoherence, I think would have revealed that he was at risk. His friends and classmates all report his inability to maintain a coherent conversation. That's not a minor problem. His obsession with lucid dreaming combined with his other disassociative behaviors would all have been red flags.
Yes, and we don't know what was done about those calls, do we. Surely, you don't think that a local sheriff would be in charge of an investigation involving threads to a U.S. House of Representatives, do you. As I said before, we don't have access to all the facts..........
Nothing was done obviously...if those calls had been part of his record,he would not have been allowed to buy the gun.
Loughner was threatening people at the college and elsewhere, not Giffords
