Bullying and harassment is bullying and harassment.
What makes ONE target of it MORE important than another?
Because one is GAY? That deserves "special t-shirt day"?
What about the MAJORITY of bullied kids?
When do they get their "special t-shirt appreciation day"?
Its about more than just one group. Now gays were at the epicenter of this one because of recent stories in the news. It doesn't change the fact the kid threw a fit that the teacher took a stand against bullying and harassing of gay students, and got kicked out of the class for it, and the school board of all things decides to discipline the teacher for kicking the disruptive student out of class.

The teacher took a stand against bullying and harassing gay students by wearing a purple shirt. The kid had a problem with the teacher taking a stand against bullying and harassment against gays and was thrown out of the class as a result.
There was a time when I would have minded less, but you're correct in that the teachers's unions are overwhelmingly liberal and the output of Ed schools suits 'em just fine. Still, if the teacher isn't the boss the whole classroom goes to hell in a handbasket.
The teacher should be in a state of keeping "decorum" for the entire class. Not just his/her personal beliefs.
And if a teacher is going to wear a purple t-shirt on support gay kids/hate anti-gay kid who is a bully day- he/she should be open to discussion about WHY he/she is.
He shouldn't be using his "authority" and asking a student to remove a belt buckle (that was displaying a confederate flag) and he shouldn't be dismissing another student for his argument against girl having to remove her belt buckle. Apparently the teacher was a big old wimp.
Isn't it about freedom of speech and expression? Or is it only OK when it suits the liberal agenda of the minute? This minute was the gay minute b/c some kid at Rutgers, in his right mind, jumped off a bridge.
The girl who was bullied to death..and even AFTER she took her life (the girl in Mass.) wasn't gay.
How are you going to stop that?
Wear an "anti-facebook" t-shirt? Get high school students across the country to delete their FB accounts?

According to the teacher he was following school and district policy concerning the confederate buckle.
I followed the Student Code of Conduct in asking the student to remove a piece of clothing that I found offensive. The Confederate Flag has a mixed history at best. What makes its symbolism different in the context of Howell Public Schools than anywhere else is the Facebook Hate Group that was created by Howell High School students in 2009. That Hate Group used the Confederate Flag as its profile picture. Furthermore, the district has for the last year asked students to remove Confederate Flags that have flown from the back of cars and trucks in the school parking lot.
And he was open to a discussion:
At the beginning of my 6th hour students asked what the “Tyler’s Army” t-shirts were about. This led to the beginning of a discussion about anti-bullying. It was a discussion about not bullying anyone due to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or social status.
Teacher Punished By School District For Dismissing Outspoken Anti-Gay Bigot From Class
I don't get it, the article said nothing about the boy being anti gay or a bigot. The teacher way out of line got a day off without pay and has to take a class, good enough.

The girl didn't have a confederate flag flying in her car or truck. It was on her belt buckle and the "following policy" teacher decided it offended him on purple t-shirt day. This was the FIRST day the offending belt buckle wearing girl, who happily took it off, wore it?
Apparently he wasn't "open" to discussion b/c he kicked the kid out of class. Most likely when teach couldn't defend why he was wearing a purple t-shirt.
It doesn't matter.
School is a place to learn and be taught - for students. For teachers - it's a place to teach the CURRICULUM.
Not a place to get involved with social issues and then pitch a hissy fit and trump a student when he gets your goat.
