That's fine, but it doesn't change what "rights" teachers have to enforce their opinions on their students and not be ready to argue with a student who doesn't agree with said teacher - especially when teacher can trump student and make him/her leave class or issue detention/suspension.

Teachers need to be Switzerland.

The job of a teacher is to teach the curriculum.

If a teacher wants to get more involved, it should focus around academics.

They aren't paid for their opinions.

They aren't paid to enforce their "belief" of the day/year/century and LEAST of all, to bring their own personal issues/beliefs into the classroom.

The kid was disruptive.
The school was also supporting a double standard.
How can we say we ban this symbol regardless of the persons intent based on maybe someone will feel uncomfortable?
Then turn around and support yet a different symbol regardless of who it may make feel uncomfortable?
Purple rainbows or what ever why this kid took issue I have no idea. The Teacher let it get out of control. More to the point I don't believe all the facts have been presented. Where I am from its darn near impossible for a teacher to be fired. Its almost impossible for them to be disiplined. Something is missing in this story.

It is so stupid and pathetic that these schools have these social issues. lol.

Asking the students to wear purple is stupid, too. It only throws fuel into the fire.

Talking about bullying, ethics, civics, equality, and fairness at a scheduled student body seminar for everybody is important. That of course should not be tied into class.

I remember our principal would address the student body during lunch hour. He would make speeches and so forth as people ate their lunch. That way it doesn't cut into academics. That is what should be done in the case of encouraging universal ethics. The keyword is universal. It's not just for the gays or the blacks or the Mexicans. It's applicable and practical for everyone.

Wearing purple is just stupid. They are asking for trouble. And they are reinforcing stereotypes.

The teacher caused the issue. He wore his purple shirt and asked a girl to remove her belt buckle that offended him on his purple shirt day.

Which is why teachers shouldn't be advocating or supporting ANYTHING other than the educating of the students when it comes to ABCs and 123s - during school hours.

So teachers shouldn't take a stand against bullying and harassment?? After all that really is what the purple shirt thing was about.

And overseen by whom? Adult liberal morons in the mood for indoctrinating a few hundred kids in one fell swoop?

What is your point?

Bullying and harassment is bullying and harassment.

What makes ONE target of it MORE important than another?

Because one is GAY? That deserves "special t-shirt day"?

What about the MAJORITY of bullied kids?

When do they get their "special t-shirt appreciation day"?

There was a time when I would have minded less, but you're correct in that the teachers's unions are overwhelmingly liberal and the output of Ed schools suits 'em just fine. Still, if the teacher isn't the boss the whole classroom goes to hell in a handbasket.

Because teaching kids not to bully and harass others simply because they are different is such a horrible thing...
