There were two Giant Eagle grocery stores in Oakland. One was located on Forbes Ave. and the other was located on Centre Ave. @ Craig St..

Jeez pipkin, how old are you ?! I assume most of us know there used to be a Giant Eagle on Center, but the one on Forbes predates me by quite a bit. Had to go into the newspapers archive to see that it was closed way back in July 1988. At the time, community leaders wanted to keep it open, but Giant Eagle said it had been losing over $300k a year for the last 5 years.

$300k a year? Sounds like a big lie to me. I'm pretty old and I don't recall the Forbes Avenue location but hard to fathom it would lose that much. Oakland's always been a bustling crazy place.

Mid 40s but I was a city kid and had a lot of activities in Oakland, Shadyside, East Liberty and Squirrel Hill. Here is the Forbes

location.https://www.google.com/maps/@40.4395...7i16384!8i8192

That would have been convenient during the only time I lived in the city proper, i.e., during the summers of 1998/1999 in a sublet on coltart while working internships downtown.

Who knows, but that is what GE told the paper (p.5, middle):

Coltart is weirdly nicer than the other nearby streets. Anyway, you guys are both really young, but have been in Pittsburgh longer than I have.

That's what I was gonna mention, that coltart one bedroom (at least 20years ago) was simple, but clean. Now, in the mid-1990s, my friend shared a house on Semple across from the (I'll call it) "storied" Uncle Jimmie's (which looks like it bit the dust in the late 2010s), and it was indeed a frighteningly dirty/shabby place!

My apartment on Meyran was a lower level / basement unit. The property owner either sold or used the back yard as a graveled parking lot for commuters. I only used the back door in order to avoid steps and neighbors. People would literally block my rear door with parked cars. M-F was hell for me.
