Struggling Foodland chain losing presence in Western Pennsylvania

Mars Foodland deli counter serving customers on Monday May 14, 2012.

The chain had about 68 supermarkets in Western Pennsylvania and parts of nearby states in its heyday, but soon, there will be just 20. A Foodland in West Mifflin converted to a Shop 'N Save on Thursday, and a Mt. Washington store will take the same step this week in what industry experts say is a move to build strength in numbers, as they face stiff competition.

Yeah, the Foodland here in McKees Rocks closed and is being replaced by a new Bottom Dollar store.

Forest Hills lost both Foodland and Shop n Save in the past 10 years. North Versailles lost both the Great Valley Foodland and the Eastland Mall Foodland. Swissvale/Regent Square lost it's Foodland by the parkway years ago. They've been going away slowly for years now.

Oakmont lost it's Foodland years ago. It was dirty and some of the meat had green mold on it. Poor people shopped there. It has been a drug store location ever since. Foodland and Shop 'n Save can't compete with Walmart and Giant Eagle. I miss Krogers.

Occasionally went to the one in Castle Shannon (now a Bottom Dollar). It was not very good.

Foodlands are just so small, its not suprising that they are disappearing. Brookline had 2 of them, so did Carnegie, Sheraden, Mt. Oliver and Carrick. And of course the Bloomfield Foodland became Shur-save.

Just look at that picture to see why they're having a difficult time. It doesn't look like they've spent a dime on upkeep in that store in twenty years.

The Mt. Washington Foodland wasn't bad. It wasn't the best grocery store, but it was okay if I needed something quick. I never really did "big" shopping there. It was usually kept up decent, but I found the prices to be high.

We'll see what it's like as a Shop 'N Save.

The Beechview Foodland closed and turned into an IGA. The new owners did a lot of remodeling, but if you're expecting a huge grocery store experience, you'd be disappointed. It's okay for what it is, though.
