One of my friends likes the ones at China Palace (Walnut Street). Another friend dislikes the ones at Sichuan Garden (1900 Murray Ave). He didn't even finish eating them. I'm not a fan (peanut butter = no go), so no personal rec from moi. They are the two fussiest eaters I know, FWIW.

That's the thing, Jay, I don't know what restaurants around here call them, I don't see them on either menu (or even close). It's not sesame noodles, and has ground pork.
Guess I will just muddle through and rely on Fuschia Dunlop and Serious Eats and see how they taste!

During the 1980s, in Washington, DC, I used to make Chinese chicken salad according to Barbara Tropp's recipe. Those around me who made what we called dan dan noodles (what you now call sesame noodles) used this similar recipe for its dressing. I think they used buckwheat noodles rather than the spaghetti in the recipe. There was no ground pork. In fact, this is the first I've heard of that. But I am by no means an expert at Chinese food.

Here's Barbara: An easy approach to sesame noodles - tribunedigital-chicagotribune

BTW, make sure to use toasted sesame oil. It makes all the difference.

I saw that Szmidt's is moving from Greenfield to downtown. What ever happened with them taking over the space that the Quiet Storm was in and what happened to the Quiet Storm?

yeah, that is not dan dan noodles. Here is the Serious Eats version.

My favorite sesame noodles were from the Chinese restaurant downtown that was where the bus stop triangle next to the Fairmont Hotel is located. There was a flower shop there too.

The Quiet Storm space fell through; Quiet Storm was supposed to be in with the AVA Lounge on N. Craig, but I see that space has become a hookah bar now, so I don't know what happened with that.

Jade Grill in Mt. Lebo has Dan Dan noodles. I've only ordered them once and from there so I have nothing to compare them to. I thought they were good, a bit of heat, pretty oily.

I went there awhile ago when everyone was raving about their noodles and the noodles themselves did not disappoint, whether in Dan Dan or in soup or any other application. However, I will add that I had a seafood soup that had a distinct taste of lamb broth in it, which was a bit off-putting. But I ate all the noodles :-)

I thought the place was okay. Not a very good location, kind of weird menu/pricing strategy, and the woman was a bit overbearing on making us try the sauces. I don't really see it lasting unfortunately. The best part of the meal was the hoppin john and cornbread... the meat was alright but nothing to write home about.

Szmidts already opened on Liberty Downtown. And another resaurant named "spork" is opening soon in the former quiet storm spot.
