The murder of PNB Rock sent shock through the entertainment and music world yesterday. He died in an apparent robbery in South LA. PNB lived in LA these days, but he still had a lot of shows in Philly this past year at the Met and NOTO.

PnB stood for Pastorius & Baynton, the name of the streets at the intersection he grow up at in Germantown.

Why should the murder of rappers shock anyone? It's the lifestyle.

I saw, national news. Random attack?

Not to sound awful, but at least this didn't happen in Philadelphia.

Apparently so. It's a shame. IMO, as someone who was never very much into the 'mumble' rap, his R&B style and catchy hooks was good and he was talented.

He made a song with XXXTENTACION about having a tough childhood. If you remember, XXXTentacion was killed the same way... unbelivable.

Um, no. Despite the tough talk by *some* rap artists, most don't go looking for violent trouble.

Thinking of higher-profile Philadelphia rappers off the top of my head:

Meek Mill was arrested for illegal drug and gun possession. He has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform.

Beanie Sigel was arrested for tax evasion.

Cool C and Steady B, long past their 80's era glory, decided to rob a bank in the 90's and killed a cop trying to stop them.

Black Thought and the rest of the Roots crew have reached great heights.

And then, of course, there's Will Smith and DJ "Jazzy Jeff" Townes.

Hard to believe there are no clear goals to show progress with the already funded ''programs'' to end gun violence.

Part of the solution? Dropping an additional $208 million to programs, community groups, activists, violence interrupters etc. to end gun violence.

Informative article.

Philadelphia is nearing 400 homicides (currently up 3% from last years record high), and shootings up even more.
Are city leaders still pushing the state for revised gun legislation within city borders? The state should give the city more freedom to alleviate a dire situation.

Some interesting points...

City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, in an August report, detailed her office’s view that the city’s anti-violence efforts had two significant shortcomings:

Only about 17% of that spending this fiscal year will be going to “intervention” programs, those that could have an immediate or short-term impact on stopping violence, such as deploying violence interrupters.
“We fund intervention work at $6,000 per shooting while New York and L.A. fund it at $24,000 per shooting,” Rhynhart said. “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done.”

David Muhammad, executive director of the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform, said intensive intervention programs, with evidence of success, should be emphasized immediately, given the crisis. Many cities embrace strategies that don’t work at reducing gun violence such as after school tutoring, gun buybacks, midnight basketball leagues, giving grants to community groups and police departments that make more arrests a priority, he said.

One city intervention program, announced in 2020 to fanfare, is a version of READI, a Chicago-based program that has won praise from anti-violence experts for dramatically reducing shootings among program participants.

READI (Rapid Employment and Development Initiative) identifies those at greatest risk of shooting a gun, and relies on outreach workers, mediators and community services to change behaviors.

But the city has failed to launch the program here due to a series of delays. City officials now say it will start in early 2023.

Is most crime usually on one end/side of Philadelphia or does it change street by street? The worst crime in Louisville for example was really concentrated in the west end. What is a rough overview of where the most crime is found?

Historically parts of North & West Philadelphia bore the brunt of violent crime. Still the case, but violent crime in Center City (downtown) has become more common than a few random isolated incidents.

The ironic part is that the city is undergoing a record amount of development in so many areas.
