As awful as this sounds, if it weren't for the horrific tragedy in Illinois, this incident would be the top story in the nation.

And as a disclaimer for others, I know the country is going down the toilet in terms of gun violence, but I am focused on Philadelphia.

They're now looking at is as a possible accidental celebratory shooting. A woman in Kensington was struck in the foot last night after several people shot in the air blocks away.

Sounds like some drunk idiots watching from afar, shot into the air celebrating the fireworks show and a few bullets struck the officers. Witnesses didn't see a gunman and said the shots happened at the exact same time as the show started.

I wonder if the person(s) responsible even remember what happened after a long night of drinking.

We've crossed Penns Landing off the list. Too many kids down there out of control. Something happens every few days down there.

I think that's a pretty big coincidence. Two separate shots striking two separate officers coincidentally? Seems more likely that somebody was shooting from outside of the event with some intention.

The police department itself said it was investigating whether it was celebratory and as the story has developed it’s become known that they were both just grazed by bullets. This story has always seemed strange to me.

This is not to say that crime isn’t a huge problem but I’m starting to think this particular incident was not as serious as it first seemed.

I'm not disagreeing with what the news or police are saying. I just think it's a heck of a coincidence that it would hit two police officers. The significance of the result is more that it created panic and reinforced the idea that it's not very safe to go anywhere right now.

Yep, the damage is done regardless of what actually happened. Thousands of people will not be coming back to the city for a long time.

Kenney statement didnt surprise me because he never looked like a leader whenever he appeared on TV. Just annoyed and confused when talking to the media. Worst Mayor in Philadelphia history

They haven’t found any shell casings so it was probably a revolver which is a common weapon used for celebratory firing.

On Citizen, , theres a report of vehicle car struck by celebratory gunfire in Fairmount a few minutes before the police were grazed by bullets. Not saying they’re connected, but it does show that general area might be a hotspot for idiots shooting into the air.

I’d say the 15 other people who were intentionally shot on the same day is the tipping point instead of a freak accident from celebratory gunfire.

And that's saying something. I completely agree.

As for the "celebratory" gunfire incident? How is that any better? I've always thought that people who engage in celebratory gunfire are not the brightest bulbs on the tree. Fail physics in high school? What goes up must come down.
