Is New Jersey even considered a significant part of the Philadelphia metro? Philadelphia, unlike manhattan, is not actually in the center but instead in the corner. Isn't it a perpetual detriment for center city to not actually be in the center?

Philly may not be exactly in the center of the msa, but in reality it does feel like it is in the center of the Delaware Valley imo. I don't see how this would be too much of detriment for Center City in regards to where people can commute.

Other major cities are on the edge of certain states, like St. Louis. Manhattan is in the center of the New York metro area and SMSA. Same too for Philly -- it is the metro and SMSA center. NYC is actually on the edge of the state, too. There's not too much of New York south of the city.

Not at all? And though it may not be at the exact center of the MSA (few urban cores are), Center City Philadelphia really isn't pushed off "into a corner."

All of the major highways in the region seem to meet up in Philly anyway so it's not like it's in some inconvenient corner.

I hope so because I have no idea what any of the points are about NYC or NJ

Center City is across the river from NJ, exactly the same as Manhattan. Center City is more central to it's metro (including NJ) than Manhattan is (also including NJ) when you consider how far suburban Long Island and Connecticut extend to the east.. I'm not sure if these facts matter or even the point of this thread.

south jersey is certainly part of the msa. location is fine but the condition of camden certainly isn't helping matters (though Philadelphia's own weak job market plays a part in camden's demise). perhaps a bigger problem is the amount of money that Philadelphia area residents spend in NYC that might otherwise be spent in Philly (if they weren't so close).
