Downtown is not even the center of Philadelphia. The waterfront, South St, South Philly and different neighborhoods are.

Cumulatively, the New Jersey suburbs lag the Pennsylvania suburbs in population and income growth rates, and they're less diverse as well, but I wouldn't say they "harm" Philadelphia any more than the Illinois suburbs harm St. Louis, the Kentucky suburbs harm Cincinnati, or the Mississippi suburbs harm Memphis.

Re the bolded section above, really? There are Latino populations all over South Jersey. Not so much in the PA burbs (except in Norristown, Kennett Square, etc. where there are Mexican populations).

Gnutella generally has pretty good insight but I think I agree with your premis and on the whole in terms of suburbs (save specific enclaves like a Korean population in say Blue Bell/North Wales) I dont see any material differences in diversity of the burbs for Jersy or PA. On the whole would say the burbs of Philly are particularly diverse on either side of the river (or in this regard similar in dynamic).

Now North Jersey is more diverse on the whole than either

New Jersey's douchbag night lifers have caused immense harm to certain parts of Philadelphia. Old City in particular

Hmmm... South Philly is one of many neighborhoods that have become more popular in large part because people are being priced out of Center City.

The waterfront isn't bad but still hasn't reached its potential; if/when more private condos are built on it, the lack of right-of-way by citizens-at-large won't be seen as a positive.

South Street IMO is trying to find a new identity. Not to date myself but I found it more interesting in the 80's when Zipperhead et al were keeping the "counterculture" spirit alive.

I'd be interested to know which "different neighborhoods" you're referring to.

Aren't there a lot of Vietnamese in South Jersey as well? I always see those Vietnamese supermarkets and Vietnamese restaurants in /around Cherry Hill.

To answer the specific question: save the blight of Camden or perhaps the occasional loss of employers - and city/state taxes - to the NJ side of the river, I don't see any harm per se.

Yes there are pockets on both sides

In my post you responded to I meant the burbbs on either side are NOT particularly diverse save specific locales
