Philadelphia Cream Cheese is not made in nor was it ever made in Philadelphia.

Cream cheese was invented in 1872 by William Lawrence. He was a dairy farmer in New York State. He called his new product "Philadelphia Cream Cheese" because at the time the City of Brotherly Love was synonymous with good food. It's similar to the way we now think of Hollywood as being synonymous with the entertainment business or Seattle being synonymous with coffee.

Other names to the list:

Zitner Easter eggs
Goldenberg peanut chews
Franks soda

I knew that.

I included it though because it is a world famous food product that actually has the name "Philadelphia" in it!

Cream cheese is a NY thing. It goes on NY things like bagels, and in NY Style Cheesecake.

If it were a Philly thing it would probably be an ingredient in, or accompaniment to some sort of regional food, but it's not (thank god, because a cream cheese cheesesteak sounds amazingly foul).

Philly should make an effort to reinforce its OWN identity and actively distance itself from NY things, IMO.

THE REAL PHILLY SANDWICH is NOT a "Cheesesteak" !!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheesesteaks are over over-rated. Period.

The REAL Philly sandwich is a roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe on (preferably) a Sarcone's roll.

... and stay away from anything on an Amoroso's roll unless you like spongy bread ...

You can't get a bad roast pork sandwich at DiNic's at Reading Terminal Market ...

(now I'm in for it!)
they are over rated unless you move to a state where you can't get them...

he wants to try a philly cheesesteak...and yes, LOL, your in for it...
so you don't like cheesesteaks...well, that's ok...
cheesesteaks are awesome!!!
