Some great business news for the region.

California biotech company Exelixis to set up major hub in Philadelphia area, hire hundreds

https://www.bizjournals.com/philadel...Pos=1#cxrecs_s

"Exelixis Inc., an Alameda, California, biotechnology company, is establishing a major hub in the Philadelphia area that involves eventually developing a 175,000- to 200,000-square-foot building and hiring several hundred new employees."

"Exelixis is exploring sites in the King of Prussia, Conshohocken and Plymouth Meeting areas for a new built-to-suit that it will eventually move into and possibly expand upon in the future. “Ultimately, it will really be a major campus for Exelixis,” said Vicki Goodman, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Exelixis."

"“We see the Philadelphia area as a great base of talent with the right education and background across Southeastern Pennsylvania, adjacent areas of New Jersey and Central New Jersey, as well as Wilmington," she said. "We see this as an ideal place to set up a center of operations.”"

"“We’re making a real commitment to the Philadelphia area. It’s not a satellite campus for us,” Goodman said. “We think that building will meet our needs for some time but have aspirations to be a global company and the East Coast could be a launching pad to expand to Europe.”"

I will say this much: given what he's in the news for right now, I suspect both you and cpomp can figure out why we invited him.

This is excellent news. EXEL is a solid biotech with a bright future. Philly is really gaining traction on Cambridge as Boston becomes more and more cost-prohibitive.

I think that's Philadelphia's newest "ace."

As someone who lives in the Boston area, I honestly don't see how this area can keep going the way it has the past 10-15 years. The biotech/IT boom has made it approach Bay Area-level cost-of-living, traffic is atrocious and infrastructure is very clearly overburdened. Don't get me wrong--it has a lot going for it, but its growth in these fields just does not seem sustainable. There's a clear imbalance.

Boston will continue to be the dominant biotech hub, but Philadelphia has a real opportunity here to really build a huge competitive advantage on the East Coast in the coming years.

The height reduction and loss of the fins is a bummer, but happy to see this moving along.

Agreed. We have the room, COL benefit, the talent and proximity that can sustain waaay more expansion. The more the momentum builds, the faster the pace will be. Pretty exciting.

And, importantly, we already have a great deal of infrastructure in place. Penn, Drexel and startups/biotechs have been growing locally for decades so we have the labs, R&D space and HQ/commercial buildings that are designed specifically for this industry. Not to mention access to patients for clinical trials. Patient recruitment is WAY more expensive and difficult than most people realize and being in a major population hub like Philadelphia is a huge benefit.

What's up with the orange stripes? I'm sure that won't look outdated 10 years from now . . . . or even 1 year from now.

Yeah, looks good even without the fins. Huge win over the former 12th Street Gym. This will add some really nice residential population density to that area as well.
