I guess it's totally up to the residents since it's their home and what they prefer. I'm from Skiatook, OK. People not from that town say Sky-uh-tuhk which completely gets all over me. People who are actually from there say Sky-tewk. The ones that matter are the ones who live there. They are the only ones who are "correct"- no matter what some dictionary says.

Absolutely. I truly believe that the pronunciation of anyplace is based upon how the people living there want it pronounced and/or pronounce it themselves.

We constantly have this argument in Nevada. People living there prefer it be pronounced and they themselves pronounce it contrary to its Spanish derivation. They pronounce it with the middle "a" being said like it would be in "cat."

Originally being from the northwest, I've always pronounced it "Or,uh'gun" (with the accent on the "Or") as I've always heard those born there pronounce it.

In the Webfoot dialect (West of the Cascades): OR-uh-gən
In the Bunchgrass dialect (East of the Cascades): OR-ee-gən

Unacceptable East Coast ignorance: OR-uh-gawn

I was born in Oregon and I've always pronounced it Or-uh-gun (accent on the Or), too.

My husband does this all the time...drives me crazy! Even though we're not from Oregon and have only lived here a little over 2 years, I think he could learn it by now, lol. Of course, he mispronounces everything, so it's not just this...

I did it. But only Once. I was only a kid at the time, but I remembered for a long time the good-natured ridicule from the relatives when I was visiting in the area.
