Anyone have an answer for this poster?

I will probably go Stringfellow to Rt 50 to 28.

Would going Fairfax County Parkway (7100) to 50 be better?

Thanks.

At that hour of the morning Fairfax County Parkway is smooth sailing. I think it would be faster than Stringfellow.

Thanks Normie for the response. Is there anybody who makes this commute who can help me with?

Hubby drives to Reston/Herndon from Gainesville for work. He goes out of his way to avoid the rush hour though. I'll get him to write up something for me to post later today.

So movedon, now that you've made this drive what advice would give for the next person?

My pleasure. I can sympathize with new people trying to find the best way to get anywhere.

You should have seen how much I struggled with traffic when I first moved here. Believe it or not it was just as bad even way back then. Eventually I found better routes but it was a long hit or miss process. What I would have given for a GPS or a thread like this!

Gainesville to Reston/Herndon according to hubby

(1) 66-28-267-7100

From northern Gainesville, get on 66 eastbound. In Centreville, take the right exit for 28 northbound. Just past Frying Pan road, take the onramp for 267 eastbound. The second turnoff will put you on 7100 (Fairfax Country Parkway), which is the main N-S road in the area and will lead you straight to the heart of Reston. Or you can go one intersection further, to Reston Parkway.

- You'll need an EZPass transponder, or the guts to stop at the toll both and throw in quarters.
- I usually use this before rush hour really picks up. When things are very busy, the 4-into-2 merge at the toll booth is intimidating.
- They just finished a series of overpasses for roads crossing 28, so it moves nice and fast now.

(2) 66-7100

From northern Gainesville, get on 66 eastbound. Continue east past both 66/28 interchanges. Take the cloverleaf onto 7100 northbound. Follow it to Reston.

- Slightly more scenic and sedate than the 28/267 option, and you don't need to worry about toll booths and transponders.
- Takes you right past Monument Drive and Fair Lakes Parkway, just in case you want to hit REI or Fair Oaks Mall on your way home.
