I think the Toll Road is the best way to get from Reston to Tyson's but here is an alternative for you.

Hunter Mill Road
Crowell Road
Browns Mill Road
Beulah Road
Old Courthouse Road
Gosnell
7 or 123

What part of Tysons Corner? Have you tried Lawyers Road to Vienna and then north on 123? I know Maple Ave in Vienna is congested but you will only be on it for a short while.

Here's one.... imagine you're en route to Dulles Airport. You're driving north on Rt. 7, intending to turn at Rt. 28 and take 28 to the airport exit. But as you're nearing Reston, you find out Rt. 28 is hoplessly jammed.

What would be an alternate route to get you to the airport without having to spend a lot of time on 28?

If you're already on Route 7, you could turn down Sterling Blvd and connect to Route 28 that way. That would let you avoid a lot of the jam. But it would be better to avoid Route 7 altogether and simply take the toll road.

A question about driving to Maryland. I'm driving to Potomac and I want opinions on which is the better way to get across the river. It's about the same distance to get there by crossing at 15 or crossing at the beltway. Usually I take 15, but with all the construction near Poolesville would the beltway be a better choice?

During rush hour, or in general?

Bumping so someone who makes this commute can give a better answer. My guess is you'd want to take 50, and then taking 28 during rush hour is faster than taking 15. But that's a guess.
