.Glick brings more than 25 years of experience in sports management, having worked in baseball, basketball, hockey and soccer in the U.S. and abroad. Most recently, he played an instrumental role in developing City Football Group, a multi-national soccer organization that includes six clubs. That soccer experience is noteworthy given remarks by Tepper that indicate interest in bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to the Queen City.
Was way up north Glenwood Ave this weekend and while riding past Crabtree Valley mall I noticed a large parcel of land being prepped for a ground breaking. Had completely forgotten about the Crabtree Terrace office project that was going there. Looked it up today and sure enough there was an updated article talking about how it is indeed getting ready to start. There's mention as well of the hotel that's supposed to go next to it which I imagine is still supposed to be the Westin that's been long rumored.
Some may remember the 40+ story Soleil Center tower that the recession killed. Looks like the interest and market is back to start developing the Crabtree area again. Though it looks like in a much more reasonable way then the big ambitions a decade ago.
River District’s first apartments breaking ground in 2020 — including affordable housing
Developer Crescent Communities announced Monday that it is donating 4.5 acres to build an affordable housing community in the heart of the project, along the Catawba River in western Mecklenburg County. There will be 124 units, with many available to Charlotte’s lowest-income residents.
That will be right next to the first phase of a Novel-branded apartment community, with some 300 units.
Ultimately, plans call for about 2,000 houses, 2,500 apartments, 500,000 square feet of retail space, 1,000 hotel rooms and 8 million square feet of office space.
Also Monday, Wells Fargo announced that it is kicking in $5 million to a parallel fund from private donors to supplement that money. Ultimately, the Foundation for the Carolinas is looking to raise $50 million privately for affordable housing.
Wells Fargo will also be offering $6 million in down-payment assistance to low-income families in Charlotte to buy homes, plus will donate $9 million to community organizations in this space over three years.
Report from TBJ indicates the Westin is still a go for Crabtree. This news comes on the heels of the Crabtree Terrace office building groundbreaking this week.
"A posting on the website of Westin Hotels & Resorts says the project is slated to open in June of next year. Another website, this one managed by Westin’s parent company, lists the project as well, citing a 2019 opening."
Apparently building permits have been issued for the site though a mid 2019 opening would be hard to fathom unless they start asap. No solid details either on just hard large the hotel will be. I would think somewhere in the middle of Charlotte's big one and Greensboro's upcoming smaller Westin. Supposedly a rooftop bar and restaurant as well as a conference center will be included.
This 22-story dual-branded hotel will welcome its first guests on Tuesday.
AC Hotel — the city’s first — and Residence Inn Charlotte City Center are located above the EpiCentre at 210 E. Trade St.
The two-and-a-half-year, 200,000-square-foot project is a joint venture between Charlotte’s Vision Ventures and Florida-based McKibbon Hospitality.
“It fits well in an urban environment,” says John McKibbon, chairman of McKibbon Hospitality.
In total, it brings 300 rooms to uptown across those two brands. Costs for the project were not disclosed.

Rooftop bar and lounge Nuvole Rooftop TwentyTwo is slated to open in mid-September.
Asheville restaurateur Peter Pollay is consulting on that venture in partnership with McKibbon. Think seafood and Mediterranean-influenced small plates that lend themselves to sharing.
