I flew from Charlotte to Denver Co. in December for $89.00 oneway on AA. on our way to Hawaii with my daugher. You can fine Cheaper fights if want to look for them.
I hear on a pod cast on AA saying that Dallas and Chaarlotte are their biggest hubs, and both will be getting more international fights.
Charlotte is one of the few airports that offers everyday fights to Cuba.
Volaris Air will give Charlotte flights to Mexico second largest city Guadalajara.
Volaris Air is now the 3rd internation carrier at CLT.
The Munich flight is being shifted from PHL, which will get a different German flight. I'd suspect that the BMW plant in Greer, SC has something to do with that.
Charlotte Metro has 209 Germany compaies and 17,020 employees. plus what Germany company are in upstate SC.
Logistically, to take American, they have to drive or take a commuter flight to CLT, then take a flight to PHL. The discussion on the Philadelphia board is that their international flights are changing including losing Munich & adding Berlin. The comment was made that maybe there weren't a lot of tourists with an interest in Bavaria.
Who has the most interest in Bavaria? BMW. Depending on where a company is located in Germany, London or Paris could be just as convenient or more, for many German companies.

Lufthansa Airlines flights out of CLT every day to Munich, plus AA has flights to Germany everyday to Frankfurt, No one has to go to Philadelphia to get a fligh to Munich. All this means is AA will have now have filights to Frankfurt and Munich.

Whatever. My father worked for & retired from the US subsidiary of one of the biggest companies is Germany. He occasionally had to go to the headquarters in Leverkusen. Flights were booked by someone in Leverkusen & he flew direct to Brussels where he either was picked up or took a commuter flight, depending on the agenda. If CLT needs that many seats to Munich, you can bet that BMW is one reason. Since you said Upstate SC is a contributing factor, there shouldn't be an argument on that. My point is that German companies will use whichever European airport works best for their location. Some of those Munich seats may be used for people going to non-German destinations.
BMW is big in SC, but Charlotte Metro has 209 Germany companies in lastest report.

Fine, apparently you didn't understand what I was saying & my example from real life didn't connect for you. Apparently you'll be happy if I tell you that all Germans are flying via Frankfurt & Munich, no matter where the start & end points are.
