Raleigh-Durham International Airport speeds up timeline for terminal expansion
Amid its unexpected growth spurt, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is moving up its Terminal 1 expansion timeline and is now planning to open new gates to passengers in 2020.
Chief Operating Officer Bill Sandifer said the reason is the airport is growing its passenger count even faster than he had predicted earlier this year.
In March, he said the airport was eight years ahead of its projections.
Now?
“We’re going to blow through 2027 projections,” he told the RDU Airport Authority Board Thursday.
According to RDU Airport Authority CEO Mike Landguth, the airport reported 597,686 passengers in July alone, a 12.3% year-over-year increase.
If all goes well, new gates will open by April 1, 2020.
From what I understand, it's sort of in limbo due to the recent budget passed by the GOP. I feel a bit mixed about everything, because on one hand I think it's was a pretty cheap shot by the legislature to cut its available funding from 25% to 10%, while on the other hand it seems like it will be more of a toy and status symbol for the two counties. From what I understand, there aren't a lot residents commuting between Durham and Chapel Hill (relatively speaking), and the chosen route is not direct at all. I feel like it would be more prudent for Durham to build a light rail ~6 mile line from Durham Technical CC/NC Central Univ through downtown and over to Duke, see how that goes, then evaluate from there.
If you want to see what a LRT line can do, look at the Lynx Blue line and development that has been built along the line. It is not a toy but another way to get to point A to point B without adding cars on the road. If it is built, you will see a mass of development along the line.
