Many on the left, especially party-line Democrats, possess an insufferable bent toward nanny-statism. Bloomberg is a perfect example. Anti-gun, anti-smoking, anti-whatever-flavor-of-the-month-makes-us-fat. Still, I'll take it over the religious moralizing of other locales. Keep your "god" out of my bedroom and my wife's genitalia, will you?

However, you should keep in mind that this study was done by a libertarian think tank--who, by the way, says that New York would have scored higher if it recognized gay marriage.

Still, it fits with New York being the least happy state, too. That, I can believe.
Do you think the "can't, won't, don't, no" attitude is because of the people or just because it is true and we are very constricted in NYS. BTW, isn't one of the researchers from NY? That's funny!

Most NYers have a "can't do" attitude, I feel, because of the unbelievably skewed system that we have and layers upon layers of legislation that stops any concerned citizen from doing anything to effect any type of change in this state.

I'm just relieve that their isn't a state worse than NY. What the hell would that be like?

Ok...I think this needs to be said...I FULLY support bans on public nudity. Particularly when one is rollerblading, riding a bike or gardening.

I don't recall seeing any stories on its abuse in New York.

Because it disproportionately impacts minority/disadvantaged communities. More of an NYC problem than a statewide problem though.

I can't say for certain that it is more of a NYC problem; NYC is more congested and is more built up, but a quick Google turned up two ED cases upstate (Port Chester and Auburn) one ED case in Brooklyn, one ED case in Harlem (Columbia U expansion). In my own community in Suffolk County, SUNY seized over 225 acres from an adjoining facility, Gyrodyne, and has developed part of it.

The last two make me nervous. Following the case in CT where the judge allowed peoples homes to be bulldozed for a convention center (citing it creates jobs and is for the public good) owning a property adjacent to a university might be asking for trouble each time the school needs to expand.

I don't know anything about Auburn or Port Chester -- are the minority or disadvantaged communities? Gyrodyne (by me in St James) is located in a rather well-to-do area.

Edit: I left off Onondoga County and a proposed industrial park there 6 years or so ago.

With Auburn, it depends on what part of town, as the Western half is more racially/ethnically mixed. Port Chester has a high Hispanic and decent Black populations.

With the Onondaga County example, I believe very few homes would have been involved and that was going to be in the town of Salina.
