I just recently found employment in Manhattan (on Broadway and 44th St), and I am looking to relocate. How far of a commute is it from Rockaway (Beach 117th St) to Manhattan? What are the best ways to travel? I read somehting about the express train at 116th St, is this the fastest option?

Thanks so much!

you've chosen the longest commute from the longest distance, a 90 minute commute from there would be good time

if you catch the A train in the morning straight from rockaway park you can make it in about 65 minutes because it takes me 50 minutes to get to chambers street. if you catch the shuttle that leaves you at broad channel your commute will be about 75 minutes.

there is no express train, there is an express bus (Q53) but the last stop is woodside on the 7 train, so you would get off there and take the 7 to times square i'm not sure how long that way is, but you can always check out Trips123 - Get Traffic, Transit, and Trip Planning Info in Real Time and thats the mta transit planner that tells you how long your commute will be.

That is one hell of a commute, either way you put it. Besides, the Rockaways can be a little sketchy at night.

Dude what are you thinking....why would you choose such a hellish commute? I dont' think there is a longer more miserable commute in the city. Your train ride ALONE will be 1 hour and 15 minutes on a good day...plus whatever time it takes to get to the train and to the office...you are lookin at an easy 1 hour and 30 minutes..knucklehead!

^^^ Did I forgot to mention that the A passes through some rough area of Brooklyn and Queens? The Rockaway stations isn't a place I want to be late at night.

This kid picked ONLY the worst commute in the city! On the positive side, if you actually use the more than 15 hours a week in hellish commuting subway time wisely..you could probably learn 10 languages, get an onlilne MBA, lose 40 pounds, map the entire known universe, and read the entire encyclopedia 5 times over.

Fun!

Horrible idea with the Q53 because it's not an express route, plus getting jammed into the 7 is no fun either.

There's really only 2 options here. Either the shuttle from 116th to the A at Broad Channel, or if you're "lucky" enough, there are a limited amount of A trains that travel from 116th to Manhattan in the morning and the return trip back in the evening. By limited I mean like 5 runs each way. Your other option is the QM16 express bus which runs from the 147th area and stop at 116th and goes express, make a few stop here and there, into Manhattan. Going to and from Manhattan the bus only runs through 6th Av. The catch is it only runs every 20 minutes for about 1 hour in the morning and in the return trip home every 20 minutes for about 1.5.

Here's the link for that bus route. Check the QM16 schedule, not the QM17:http://mta.info/busco/schedules/qm16cur.pdf

That might be a more attractive option instead of taking the train. Oh, and it's $5 per ride.

Yikes!!!!
Why in the world would you want a commute like this?!??! Also, Far Rockaway pretty much sucks. If you haven't moved there yet, I would seriously reconsider!
Why don't you move to Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, or North Richmond Hill? Or even Greenpoint?
If you don't mind a long commute, you can even move to LI (Nassau County), then you can take the LIRR.
