The Mayor is practicing the age old political tactic known as COVER YOUR A$$. If the proverbial Stuff hits the fan he can say we are prepared, and if nothing happens he can give the "error on the side of caution" speech. As far as the main stream media hype, If you still watch it then you deserve to be fed complete foolishness because you are in fact a fool. I for one have logged onto the nation hurricane website once a day and learned all I needed to know about the hurricane in 10 mins, apposed to watching some poor weather guy get hammered by rain and wind for hours on the news. Hope everyone stays safe and good luck to you and your families.
Don't be watching the news. They're blowing up a lowly Cat 1 hurricane into a furious, hyper storm that's gonna level the city. Talk about sensationalism.
Seriously, all NYC is gonna get is a little rain, a little wind and not much else. Everyone is SERIOUSLY overreacting.
Katrina is MUCH different than this one. I seriously doubt Irene will upgrade to a Category 3 over the cooler Atlantic when it reaches the tri-state.
So what? People will still be b*tching if some damage is done. That's the problem with people, they are never happy and always complain about everything.
Fox and some of the other cable networks should have their licenses pulled for inciting panic.Just heard them talking about a "possible 6 to 12 foot storm surge coming into lower Manhattan from NY harbor".
This is after the storm made landfall in North Carolina without the lights even going out.
They are still reading from scripts written for them 3 days ago.
Uh there are thousands without power in NC right now and an 8 foot surge on a city at sea level is no joke. Good thing you're prepared right.
The hype is crazy. From someone from Miami dont worry NYC you will be fine!! I dont even think this thing will be a CAT-1 by the time it gets up there. A strong topical storm seems more likely to me
Anyone think there is any chance our bumbling mayor will come to his senses and not go through with this insane total shutdown of the transit system ?
Latest reports are that the storm is beginning to weaken and fall apart which is what they usually do as soon as they get to Cape Hatteras.
They're saying it will be a Cat 1 as it makes landfall in NYC. 75-80 mph winds, I think. That's pretty bad. This doesn't even take the storm surge into account, which could inundate some city neighborhoods.
Apparently, the pressure of the storm is low enough to support a Cat 4 storm.
So, watch it's progress. Irene is very resilient.

The lights did go out, big time. Currently 220,000 are without power, and that number is expected to rise exponentially.
