I just saw TWO positions in legal firms offering $25,000-30,000. NO LIE. They're still up on Monster.
Legal is always a low paying field at the bottom end, always will be. As for the wages, the median income in NYC is ~25K with a household income of ~54K. So really, what you're seeing is pretty average.
I would like to think that I would never do that... but you never know.
That sounds outlandish, though.
It actually sounds fun to me... haha. I like doing detective-type work like that, though. I think it's a creative approach, especially if it's a job where resourcefulness is paramount, like a concierge or something.
I don't think they're wrong for asking for what they're asking for, but it DEFINITELY comes off like a scam. I've found that the MAJORITY of jobs on Craigslist are scams. They are getting REALLY creative with them lately. MANY jobs on Monster are scams too.
Definitely not everything on there is a scam. The job I eventually found was a sourced through Craigslist, and the guy I stumbled across headhunting for Sotheby's and Christie's, which were actual full-time/permanent job-jobs...he had a post on Craigslist. His ad stood out though because it was very solid and to-the-point with details, and wasn't full of obnoxious HRese. (ie; job title is "this", starting salary range is "this", etc.)
Monster, Indeed, and everything else of it's ilk I've never liked or had any luck with. CL is less polished and more "anything goes" which can be good and bad. It's kind of like the wild west of job hunting. Most of the time you hit booby traps but sometimes you do hit pay dirt.
