I hope that the conference room story isn't true!!! It's disturbing!!!!

Default Don't forget about Staten Island

I fall in the 25-40k/yr category. I'm paying $900/mo for a 1 bedroom apartment in Staten Island working in Newark NJ. It's a very bizarre situation compared to the typical NYer, but financially, I have less complaints than those typical NYers.

My commute to work isn't even all that bad either. I drive 15 miles one way, and it only takes about a half hour. I'm thinking of moving to NJ (Lyndhurst/Rutherford), but I'm still debating it.

I think there's tons of people who pay and sacrifice so much to live in nice areas of BK/Man/Q JUST for the bragging rights. I however can care less....only if I was a millionaire would I ever live in Manhattan or Park Slope

Quite frankly, if companies expect a 4-year degree to apply for one of their mindless jobs, it better be paying near 60k. Maybe even 50k...but anything less is PATHETIC. It means the company CANNOT afford to pay decently and if they can't afford it they shouldn't expect the cream of the crop or put stupid stipulations on applicants. It's like me handing $800 to a realtor and telling them I want a 2 bedroom apartment in the UES.

I encourage all of you to email these companies and find out who they are so we can announce it and everyone will know who the cheap bastards are out there:

Thanks for posting... I get a laugh at reading these. The sad thing is though when I speak to my family that does not live in NYC they think 30-40K is reasonable.

I sometimes end up fighting with them because they do not understand that I can make more money at least 50K. They think I am being unreasonable even though I have the years experience.

They think it is just an admin job who is going to pay that type of salary.

If you move to NY, welcome to poverty central! I'd never, in the right mind, would move to NY. Move to Boise, and you're life would be alot better and more prosperous!

This is true. One of my tenants is a transplant frim bmore. He goes to work at 9 in the morning but he comes back around 11 at night for almost a couple of months, his employers is not paying him ot. According to him his pay for the year is locked in his salary. I told him they are screwing you over. Top it off him and his roomate have to split a 2500 dollar rent. He told makes around 35k a year.

I'm right there with ya! If I wasn't getting such a good deal on my basement apartment I would move to S.I. or NJ, the "not cool" areas LOL. You know what's cool? Having a savings account and extra cash in my pocket! I'm 25 btw.

The sad part is that it probably is. I bet blue regrets posting that now. I wanted to scream "BROWN NOSE" at the top of my lungs when I read that. People can say I'm hating. I'm not. I find it really pathetic. I feel I've had to lower my standards enough by living in NYC and I'm not about to lower them even more.

I live in SI too, and also pay $900 for a one bedroom apartment. I honestly like living in SI. I commute to Manhattan, not bad at all, just get on an express bus and relax.

At this point in my life, I wouldn't even want to live in Manhattan.

I'm just counting the days until I can get out of this city all together.

It's understandable because their rents are probably $500-900/month vs. a NYC rent which can range anywhere from $1,000 in crap places all the way up to $3,000 in Manhattan..or even MUCH more.

When I lived in a neighboring state here in the northeast, I was making $9 and rented a studio apartment for $300..this was in 2007. I was able to pay for my car insurance, gas, groceries and had some fun money. I was only saving about $200-300/month though, but there's a big difference. I don't think TWO people making $9/hr could even afford an apt. together out here.

I previously considered moving to S.I. and everyone would object and tell me how horrid the commute is, that there's only one way out, that it's "boring" lol. I could care less about that. The only reason I didn't move there is because I heard you had to take the ferry every day to get in and out. Too bad they don't build a bridge connecting S.I. to Manhattan and Brooklyn ...or have they? lol
