We are looking at moving out to Mt. Olive, but my husband needs to commute to NYC everyday. He most likely would drive to Mt. Arlington or Dover, and then take a train in. Can someone tell me how bad traffic would be on 80 going from exit 27A to either of these stops, and also how long the train ride would be? From what I can tell, it seems like it would be an extremely long commute; therefore, not really an option, but I just wanted to check.

Also, can anyone recommend an area a little closer in that has good schools and affordable houses? We'd like to get a house about ~2600-3000sqft that has a decent commute to the city. I think a train would be preferable over the bus cause of potential traffic issues. I know house prices are all relative depending on the taxes, but we're looking maybe at about $550K. Any help would be appreciated!! (We're in Bloomfield/Clifton area now).

if he leaves early (before 6:30), the traffic won't be too bad but the commute is brutal, imho. doesn't mean people don't do it. my husband did it for a short time (he took the bus into the city from the rockaway mall) and worked very close to the PA and it still was tough. he was glad to eventually find a job in NJ.

before places are recommended, what is an acceptable commute time? depending on where he works in the city, the commute can be 2 hrs each way from this area.

He must leave before 6:00AM to handle the Route 80 portion without heavy traffic. I find 6:15AM is the magic time at Exit 30 (Mount Arlington). Before that you are OK. After that it quickly fills. If he goes to Mt. Arlington, he does not need to use Route 80 at all, he can cut through Roxbury on Hillside or Eyland Ave with no traffic.

You might consider Rockaway as an option. A little bit closer in. A little bit easier. But still not easy. Randolph is another option. Great schools, close to Dover train station, but you will get less house since the area is more desirable.

I would probably look at the Randolph option and sacrifice a little bit on the house size/age. It will give you a better balance between schools, commute time, and lifestyle. The North part of Randolph is a very quick ride to Dover.

my husband leaves our house around 6:20am and gets to that area around 6:40 and has no problems. 6am is a bit too conservative. but the overall commute is not something i would recommend.

if you want to stay sane, with your budget, move somewhere else, get a smaller house. that commute will be brutal.

I lived in rockaway by the mall and commuted to parsippany (about 20-25 mins.) I moved out to mt olive and I curse my commute every day - an hour plus...it's brutal and your so exhausted by the time you get home. Sure you get more house but for me at least it'd not worth it. Head east and downscale. Or at least get closer like in the convent station area of Morristown....prices will be high for real estate tho. My best advice would be to experience it one day and see if you & your husband think its worth it.

I may be doing this soon. I'm mapping Mt olive to Rutherford in 48 minutes. Not sure where the school comments came from, but grandchild has them highly rated.

in rush hour, that is next to impossible. although it would be very long, you could take the train from mt olive to newark, then the 76 bus to rutherford.

Horrible commute--add at least 1 hour to the 48 minutes.
