there's tons of towns that have livable walkable downtowns.....most in fact do. Portsmouth, Dover, Peterborough, Hanover, Exeter, etc. etc. Does that mean you won't need a car though....no. The towns in NH are very small and not exactly a booming metropolis where you can get everything you need in a few blocks radius like New York. The downtowns are small and full of specialty shops, but the actual supermarkets and shopping centers (i.e. target, kohls, walmarts) aren't going to right on top of the town centers.
I have a few friends who live in Keene and survive well without owning cars
it's a fairly walkable place and has a trolley that runs through diff. areas... not sure how it works tho just have seen it a couple times
If you live near Monument Square in Hollis, you could be within 1/2 mile of the general store, all three schools, the library, playground, town hall, and a shopping center with a supermarket, diner, bank, town clerk, etc. But on cold or wet days, that could be a loooong 1/2 mile.
I have a hard time eating donuts. It's one of the worst foods imaginable. I eat at DD on occasion but it's far from my favorite. I came from a city of 300,000+ with a total metro area double that.....and we only had one DD that eventually went out of business. I had no idea they were such an institution out here until I moved. I still don't get it Give me a TimmyHo's any day of DD
