Hanover, NH has pretty good public transportation. For what it's worth.

If you live in the lebanon area, there are busses that take you ALL around the local area. You can ride in from Canaan, go to west leb for groceries and christmas presents, then head to work at Dartmouth. The bus system here is free and runs 12 hours a day DURING the week!! On weekends, youre stuck in your town. Hanover or West lebanon would be ideal if you went car-less.
