This. New Hampshire is very much "live and let live". No one is going to bother you for living the way you want, or believing what you believe. But the flip side is also expected of you, respect your neighbors' rights to live the way they wish and you'll be fine. There is no shortage of churches and religious communities here. The difference with some other parts of the country, however, is that a question about where you go to church is not a part of the default conversation when you meet someone.
Very well said and all true. People in New England are not "churchy". Although they may attend every Sunday.
People of different political persuasions can be friends in NH. Liberal and libertarian people are not dangerous. You may make some friends who do not believe exactly as you do. And that's OK.
NH is more Libertarian than conservative or liberal. And as DebNashua said "NH is very much live and let live".
Very informative and curious if/how much things have changed in NH since then.
Used to live in MA and was shocked by how much changed after 2016. Just mentioning the name Trump literally triggered people into hysterics, then just as I thought things couldn't get worse, the "pandemic" struck and brought out the absolute awful in people. I lost friends and family just for considering a different perspective.
We're currently living in Florida and moving back up north for a few years as my daughter is going to college up there. Have always loved the rural life and looking for land to homestead with my family. Would love to have the option to be off grid, don't want to be isolated just want to be more self sufficient.
I'd really like to live around people who haven't lost their minds - not trying to be rude just don't know how else to say it. MA took it's toll on me for a while there.
From what I've been reading in this thread, NH seems like a place where we might be a good fit.
But as I initially stated, wondering have things changed since the 2016 election? Thanks for any thoughts shared.
More changes in the past 2 years than since 2016. More people moving up here from out of state, no available housing, forests getting cleared for new development, more traffic, more noise, more general surliness, more demands on town services and school sure to follow with higher taxes, no available household service people (housekeepers, pet sitters, plumbers, etc) or new town hires (police, mechanics, W&S workers) to be found. Things have not changed for the better.
NH is a purple state still trending blue politically. It's still miles ahead of Massachusetts in liveability IMO. Trump almost won NH in 2016, he got slaughtered in 2020. A RINO like Sununu plays well up here these days...so there's that.
You will most likely never see conservatives like Bob Smith or Gordon Humphery ever elected up here again.
North of Concord things are somewhat ok...and what you are looking for.

Sununu would play well in most places, and make an excellent candidate for president, since he largely represents the pragmatic, socially moderate, fiscally conservative principles that the majority of those living outside of the extreme left and right camps support.

What towns have been more impacted by excessive development and forest clearing for housing over the last few years? I know many towns in NH have extensive conservation lands or easements that can't be built on at all which preserves the quality of life for everyone.

The GOP is a populist party nationwide. Sununu would get 5% of the vote at best in a national GOP primary for president. He's a New England Republican. He's a wart on a toad in the south, the GOP base.

We know the reasons why the southern GOP base has next to nothing in common with New England Republicans or Republicans from other regions of the US that are far removed from the South.
Let me rephrase something written above...Sununu would make an excellent president, but a lousy candidate because his moderation and reasonableness have led the GOP leadership to despise him.
