we went to the donkey basketball game the other night, twas my 2nd time going & i realized i had never got pictures the last time around. we gotta fix that!

first & foremost - this is a fundraising effort for the middle & high school kids. tickets were under $10/person & it's a couple of hours of cheap entertainment. these donkeys were born & raised to do just this - play basketball. they are used to the screaming fans, they are friendly & well cared for. the announcer was sure to let the crowd know no sudden movements around the animals & during half time everyone is invited to pet, sit on & get your pictures taken with the donkeys. i believe this is the company they use: Donkey Sports, Inc. Entiat Washington

have you played the super bowl square game? where you pay x amount of $$ per square & if you pick the right square, you win $$. donkey basketball has the same kinda thing. but you're betting on where the donkeys will poop!!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

during the game, whenever poop is found on the floor, a time out is called & they take measurements. x amount of feet from the west wall, x amount of feet from the north wall. they then compare the measurements to the squares purchased. if your name is in that square, you win!!

the official pooper scooper:

there are 8 teams. there are 5 games, with the last game as the championship round (2 highest scoring teams). the games aren't very long, about 15 minutes each.

you MUST be on your donkey to shoot. any baskets made off of the donkey do not count. you have to be connected to your donkey at all times - if you are going after a loose ball, you are allowed off of your donkey to fetch it but one hand must have the reins to your donkey.

there are no out of bounds. balls & donkeys freely wander the floor. anyone in the crowd may help a loose ball back into the game.

the donkeys wear protective slippers, so they don't slip & slide all over the court & the court doesn't get damaged by their hooves. they are kinda like house slippers

the referee watches the game but also is the donkey herder. if he sees anyone mis-handling or being abusive to the animals he can & will stop the game. he uses the stick to keep the herd moving.

some teams like to "entice" the animals. this team had carrots, someone else had apples:

this guy goes every year & is always doing goofy things:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

to get a good idea of how "fast paced" the game is, i filmed a small bit of it. you'll hear the announcer talk about nacho cheese having the ball - "nacho cheese" is a regular, he is the 8th grade science teacher & is on the same team as "that's my cheese" a fellow teacher. they've gotten really good at the game!

mark your calendars for next years game - first friday in march 2018!

this post has nothing to do with nye county in anyway, but it is a favorite attraction of mine & it's fairly close to home, so we'll cover it

scotty's castle is located in death valley, ca. it is approximately 2 hrs northwest from pahrump.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

for those of you who don't know what scotty's castle is (i had no idea until i moved here), it's a castle but not really a castle & even tho it's named "scotty's" it really didn't belong to him (he was a freeloading con man who made bff's with the owners of the "castle").
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotty%27s_Castle

pahrump gets ~4" of rain per year. death valley proper gets ~2". in october 2015 there was a super bad thunderstorm in the area around scotty's castle. they received almost 3" of rain in 5 hrs! the castle is situated in a valley. all the studies that had been done in the past predicted flood waters would come from the east, down one specific canyon. well....mother nature had different plans in mind. the flood waters came from a canyon northeast of the castle. the castle itself surprisingly wasn't hit as bad as the surrounding buildings.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

the castle has been closed since the flood. the national park service originally thought the park would be closed for a few days, but here we are 1.5 yrs later & it's still not opened. they are anticipating opening the castle again in either 2019 or 2020. california is broke & can't afford the billions of dollars it will take to restore the castle to it's original condition, so they partnered with the death valley national history association to offer limited tours & raise some funds for the castle.

Hottest. Driest. Lowest.

the videos are fascinating to watch. there are some on youtube as well - the one with the thundercloud is amazing. our tour guide said the storm hit after hours, so no one was actually inside the castle (thankfully). however, in a nearby attraction in the park, there were a dozen or so visitors that got stranded on a high piece of ground. with park rangers there to keep them safe. for HOURS - like 6pm to 2am. they got to see firsthand how powerful a flash flood can be, with dumpsters & picnic benches floating by.

so what got damaged at the castle? o boy. well, there was mud everywhere. like 3 to 4 feet of mud. the mud had to be shoveled by hand away from the buildings.

you can see the water/mud line in some of these photos
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

other damage

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

the power company replaced 24 power poles. 24! with the power poles knocked out, obviously there was no power to the castle. which means...no hvac either. the castle didn't get mud INSIDE, but they did find at least 1 leak in the roof. so now you have a building full of antiques with no hvac & water getting inside. can you say mold? they have removed every piece of artifact from all of the buildings. 139,000 pieces, including the antique car, can you imagine???
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

so they have to repair/replace the roof. they have to get the hvac working properly again. & then there's the road to the castle.....

it's not a great picture, but the road to the castle is completely gone in some spots:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

other spots, just the shoulder is gone. plus there is a natural spring, just up the road from the castle. humans had forced the stream to go one way for years. after the storm, mother nature decided the stream needs to go right across the parking lot, so that will need to be addressed at some point.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i was surprised at how quickly the tickets for this tour sold out & how cheap they were ($25!). there are rumors that they might do this again in the fall, if so, i'll be right there.

if you'd like to donate to any of the death valley projects, you may do so:

cre8lite,
Thanks for your continuing posts. Though we don't live in Pahrump (yet) it feels like we know the community well thanks to you and the other Pahrumpians here. We're both retired and plan on moving within the next couple of years with Pahrump is on the very short list of places that we would consider moving to having all the amenities we are looking for in a small community and within an hour of a major metropolis. A bit concerned about moving into town as we're pretty secluded here with our nearest neighbors about a quarter mile away, but willing to trade that for an acre or two of low maintenance flat land and proximity to shopping and other needs.
Thanks again and take care, Ron

hey ron! i am glad to know pahrump is on your short list you can still find places larger than 2 acres here, if that's what you want. it'll be on the far edges of town but they are available. when you get ready to start land/home shopping, DM me & we'll chat about the details.

Hey, cre8lite, do you happen to know what used to on Manse just east of the 160? There are a bunch of foundations and some dead trees there now.

Default Well/water

Has any decision been made about the wells? We left there 15 months ago and moved to Boise, ID. Big mistake!! I hate the weather. Thanks. Barbara

desert_rat - iirc that used to be an industrial type place. it was never occupied during my time here, i just remember the empty metal buildings. there were 2 or 3 of them there. right about the time of the crash in '08, those building disappeared. at one point there was some fancy building contractor that saw how many people were commuting into vegas & proposed a condo type building in that same area east of 160. i think that's when the empty metal buildings came down.

370z - boise? o my! i love the trees, but dang....those winters? i'll pass! i'm not sure which decision about the wells you're referring to, but i can tell you they are trying to impose water restrictions on new housing developments in town. you can only water on certain days during these times of the year & the landscape must have xeroscape plants. only applies to new housing developments at this point. there has also been talk about getting rid of the water board & letting the bocc take over the decisions the water board would've heard/considered. right now, things are just being discussed, nothing permanent has been decided.

I thought They were trying to put meters on wells and tap in to them? To get the water to build more homes. No?

ooooo no, no no no & no. there is no way they are putting meters on existing wells out here, unless the homeowners volunteer for that kinda thing. remember how gun loving the natives are? can you see what would happen if someone decided to step foot on my property to put a meter on my well? there would be an all out riot if that kinda thing happened.

the commissioners are well owners & at least half of them are gun owners too. there has been talk about metering new developments, but not for us existing well owners.
