Also directed Force Majeure, which is also highly recommended. Swedish film, director. Both written by Ostlund. Watching the trailer for The Square, it seems like they are giving a lot away, but actually it misses everything. Streamed it on Amazon.
Have seen nothing about this "The Square" but will be watching
Just saw "Den of Thieves" w/Pablo Schreiber and Gerard Butler
Better than the 45 Rotten Tomatoes scored it just so people who may skip it might reconsider...
Schreiber is strong foil to Butler and O'Shea Jackson is definitely someone to watch---haven't seen "Ingrid Goes West" yet
I kept thinking "young Ice Cube" needless to say but he is likely better actor
Director/writer Christian Gudegast has pulled from some of the better heist films including "Heat" with the protagonist/antagonist confrontation and offers some good, low-key acting and couple of scenes with palpable tension...
Don't take it for granted...
Hostiles - 6/10. The best part, which wasn't enough to save it from a wait for the dvd, was the performances of Wes Studi and Adam Beach (Chief and his son) - otherwise it's be a 5/10. I don't know if it was the script (Rosamund Pike could have shined), or the editing, but most likely both, which did it in for me. Dispite the script, Christian Bale was good. Rory Cochrane was very good. Took me a bit to place him - from Dazed and Confused.
Spoiler
No way in hell Rosamund Pike's character gets away in the opening scene, which is the premise for the rest of the film. I mean she outruns two on horseback, then hides under rocks? Uh huh. Later as they track the 3 trappers who kidnapped the 3 girls, the Chief's son looks at the riverbed and tells them everything except their credit card numbers from the river bed rocks. And the ending - let's have a shootout on the land that the President said they could release the prisoners to live free. Again - script.
What is IOO?
I would agree with you but Wes Studi and Adam Beach have maybe 10% of the dialogue (not that they need dialogue to create a character) so saying their performances were the best aspect would strike the rating down to 4/10...
It was just a big disappointment especially since I disagree a good many of the "critical" reviews
Spoiler
And totally agree re her miraculous "escape"---that baby was bleeding all over the place and any Comanche that could track blood spoor is a poor excuse for a Comanche

I gave credit to the cinematography, though the editing wasn't up there with the best, for example the whole gamut of fade shots for the sake of, fade shots. Take a film like Kelly Reichardt's Meek's Cutoff, another western, with a spectacular fade shot - just one, and it's breathtaking - a wagon train seen from ground level as they approach the camera, then the very slow fade so that you see a wagon train from a distance seeming to float in the air, then the low sloped mountain fades in and it completes the shot. Lots of good pieces in Hostiles, just not put together in a complete picture. And dialogue may add or subtract from a performance, as you well know. Even Ben Foster, who could have brought a lot to this film, was there, then gone.
Was using my Roku tonight and on one channel came across "Atilla" with Gerard Butler in what was a very early starring role for him---
Still had some of his Scot accent...
Don't know if his teeth are capped or not but they always appear too big for his mouth...
Meek's Cutoff was so SLOW...some great shots but had its faults as well...
Not in my book.
