Thought might see that but Gemma Arterton isn't a favorite w/me...
How is she??

Well, I liked her, but I always have -- and of course I don't know what it is about her that you dislike. I find her to be engaging and natural, and rather mesmerizing to look at. (Although I get distracted by her MASSIVELY broad shoulders!)

Arterton plays Mrs. Katrine Cole, who gets a job as scriptwriter to write "slop" -- any dialog spoken by a woman -- for which she'll be paid less than the male scriptwriters (although she later asks for and receives a bit extra) and which, it is stressed to her, is just a temporary gig. To her male colleagues' surprise, they have good working chemistry with her, and Mrs. Cole has a nice rapport with the aging actor, Mr. Hilliard, played by Bill Nighy, and is able to coax the best from him during production. The film they are working on faces various stumbling blocks, largely because everyone wants to have a hand-in, and they have to figure out how to have the film be all things to all people. But they pull it off. By the end of the movie, many of the characters have "found" themselves, in a way...come into their own, or maybe just gained a better appreciation for who they are at the moment.

It doesn't feel like a war movie, necessarily. Short of having to endure the air raids on London, the characters of the movie seem rather far removed by the war, and largely untouched by it.

Oh...surprise casting (for me): Helen McCrory. I recognized her from Penny Dreadful, but she also played Narcissa Malfoy (Draco's mother) in the HP movies. I don't watch a lot of British television, but she does seem to have an extensive CV there.

Just watched Invictus with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Not great, but enjoyable.

Body Double (1984). Pretty violent, even by today's standards. It must have been pretty shocking to watch 33 years ago. The storyline and acting feels rather cheesy at times. Melanie Griffith really stands out here, like she also did in Jonathan Demme's Something Wild two years later.

Colossal

This was a resounding "NO!" for me. The trailer makes this seem like a quirky comedy, maybe, but oh, no. Do not be deceived!

Anne Hathaway plays a thirty-something alcoholic named Gloria who spends her nights drinking and passing out and her mornings apologizing and making excuses and promising there won't be a next time and getting defensive when her boyfriend points out there's ALWAYS a "next time." He kicks her out and she returns to her hometown, where she runs into an old friend from childhood. He owns a bar and the two of them, along with two of his buddies, spend their nights drinking. Meanwhile a giant godzilla-like monster is loose in Seoul. Gradually, Gloria comes to realize that, although she doesn't know how, SHE is controlling the monster. The movie just sort of devolves from there. Everyone's dysfunction is more fully revealed and their dynamic with one another feeds the destruction.

I walked out with 20 minutes left in the film, and to be honest, I stayed longer than I should have.

If you have any sort of history with alcoholism, either because you were the alcoholic or because you've had alcoholics in your sphere, this may not be the film for you. It definitely wasn't the film for me.

Just got back from seeing Their Finest, a British movie about a filmmaking crew during WWII. We both liked it a lot. Lead actress Genna Arterton reminds me a lot of Teri Hatcher in her Lois Lane days. Also enjoyed Bill Nighy.

Ghost In The Shell. I watched the original Anime years ago, so I wanted to see this movie and see how they handled the source material.
