I just saw a great new film today, screened at our Independent Film Festival. "Wrestling Alligators: The New Seminole Wars". It's about the Seminole tribal chair who basically invented Indian gaming, as a way to pull the tribe out of poverty. It started out as bingo--the first Native American bingo hall in the US. And it grew from there to bring in billions annually for the tribe. Tribal members finally got nice homes, their kids got college scholarships, economic development happened, despite the State of Florida's attempts to close it. And after the tribe won the right in federal court to have casinos, other tribes followed suit.
