If anyone hasn't seen Minari yet, I watched it a few days ago and loved it, so I highly recommend it! It was a real love letter to America. I'm surprised the female lead didn't get nominated, but am glad the "grandma" won.
I will give it another shot. Somehow the first few minutes did not draw me in.
The In Memoriam segment was horrible. I know the Academy often gets flack for not including everyone, but it was aggressively fast. If they wanted to do it rapid-fire, they should have kept the names and photos in the same spot. Every time a photo switched, I found myself scanning the screen to try and find a name before it disappeared, and by then I didn't get to see the photo. I think I got whiplash watching it!
That is my biggest complaint. I look forward to seeing this segment every year because it makes me emotional to see the faces. This year it was so fast I missed half of it.
I knew the show was going to be different but I expected more. One of the other shows, maybe SAG, did such a well-done virtual show that I was thinking they should switch to that format. Hope they never include that trivia bit again.

I was not even going to give it a shot, ended up watching repeats of "Lone Star Law" instead. From what I have heard since, I didn't miss anything. One review suggested streaming it as a sleep aid.
within the first few seconds when the host, don't remember her name, said something of getting her marching shoes on, I thought, oh no, i'm not doing this.
Just because your a movie star, keep your political opinion to yourself, and that was not the place to broadcast it.
that was a major turn off.
Agree that he should nto get the award due to his age alone, if his performance in this movie was not the best of the best even though he is a great actor. But then he has won previously for the Silence of the Lambs and this is a not a consolation price for him before it is too late.
Some actors and actrsses just disappear into the role that you do not think of them as actors any more. Hopkins is one of them. Frances McDormand is another. I also love Judi Dench, who makes acting so effortless ( she was superb in Philomena, and it was a shame she did not win an Oscar for that).
I've only seen clips of it, but what I did see his diction (due to aging) is no longer clear.
