I didn't watch it either, but I do know that several blogs I read seemed to find it incredulous that Anthony Hopkins beat out Chadwick Boseman for Best Actor.
I haven't seen either performance (though The Father has been on my list for a while), but I find it hard to believe that Anthony Hopkins winning an award for acting needs any justification. He's one of the best performers at this craft of all time and the reviews of the film were wonderful.
Well, given what has been mentioned so far......And considering the political/racial slant of the awards.....
We enjoyed ourselves
My youngest son and I spontaneously broke into a commentary, akin to Mystery Science Theater, which initially caused my oldest son to threaten to turn the program off if we did not start, but when we he could no longer resist and broke down laughing, he joined in.
Examples:
Craig Foster: I'd like to thank Olli the Octopus, who cannot be here tonight but I can say he tasted just like Calimari
Frances McDormand : I'm really tired and just want to go back to my van and sleep now
Yuh-Jung Youn : In my country , Octopus is eaten as Calimari
Best Picture Nominees Revenge of the Octopus, produced by the Sci-Fi Channel A young Octopus is upset by his exploitation at the Oscars and rallies his friends for a deep sea takeover...
And there was mention of Don Cheadle Every time A film or commercial showed anyone....Hey look Don Cheadles in that too
But what can be done with an award ceremony without the outlandish clothing? I am not one who cares what people wear. I have enough choices in my own wardrobe daily and sometimes dress up for work (when I go out and do any, that is) So from the ugly red dress of Olivia Coleman to Florian Zellar's rented tux and no Comb to go with it, here are the commentary about some of the items warn.....
Reese Witherspoon: Does this dress make me look fat? us: Yes, yes it does.
Laura Dern: I apologize, there was a problem getting into my closet so I just wrapped myself in a throw rug instead.
Amanda Seyfried: Y'all like my Boobies?
SO, you see, the awards were what you choose to make of them. Yes, one could sit by and say "Oh this is the most disappointing show ever" OR you can do as we do all day , every day, just have fun with it. And While Comedies don't often win at the Oscars, well Comedy does win in life. Because those who laugh the most are the happiest and most well adjusted. And we have the most fun.
I'm an Oscar fan. Every year I make a point of watching all the Best Picture nominees before the awards show. This year I just couldn't get into it for some reason. Didn't see any of the films (I attempted Mank, but it stunk!)
I still watched the telecast out of curiosity mostly. And I was REALLY disappointed at many of the production choices. The show needs a host, just to tie everything together. This one seemed to amble along aimlessly just jumping from presenter to presenter with little transition.
I do like that they seemed to limit the awards with multiple winners to one representative speaker, but they also didn't rush acceptance speeches.
The In Memoriam segment was horrible. I know the Academy often gets flack for not including everyone, but it was aggressively fast. If they wanted to do it rapid-fire, they should have kept the names and photos in the same spot. Every time a photo switched, I found myself scanning the screen to try and find a name before it disappeared, and by then I didn't get to see the photo. I think I got whiplash watching it!
But the worst of all was the decision to change the order of the final four awards!! WHY would they give out Best Picture before Best Actress and Actor?!? Especially with the Best Actor winner being absent, it made for a horribly anticlimactic end.
This was the first year I haven't watched the Academy Awards in years. It's hard to imagine paying attention to something that glamorizes celebrities and films in a year that saw so much agony for others.
While the likes of Glenn Close, Daniel Kaluuya and Zendaya were quietly escorted into Union Station on Sunday for the 93rd Academy Awards, a different kind of procession was unfolding around the corner: Angelenos struggling to find a COVID-19 testing site that had been relocated from the front of the transit station to the backside of the complex to accommodate Oscars festivities.
While I usually look forward to and enjoy watching the Oscars, last night's show was really bizarre in so many ways. To me the worst thing was the lack of film clips for the nominees, especially this year when many of the movies I've not seen and several I'd not even heard of. Going through production design, costume, makeup, and not having a clue what these things looked like made the awards very boring.
I don't think the show needs a host. In fact, I greatly enjoyed the last 2 years when they didn't have a host. But this year even lacked an announcer as to what was going on. At the beginning, when they did the original screenplay award, the first one of the night, it wasn't until they said "And the Oscar goes to..." that I even realized they were talking about the nominees! Without the film clips, I thought they were just going through talking about some of the great films nominated.
They let everyone ramble on and on with their speeches. I'm not a fan of long speeches as it is and this year was just unbearable with the speeches.
I may get a some flack for this, but here goes... It goes without saying that Frances McDormand is a fantastic actress, but she looked like she didn't even bother to comb her hair for the event, let alone put on make-up. I wonder why. Was she just trying to make a statement of some kine?
I think she's just not into the whole Hollywood glamour factory business. She's a middle-aged actress, not a model. She shows up to events, but in her own way.

I really hope next year is better!
Yes, I didn't have time to read the name and look at the picture each time in the memorium segment. Didn't do justice at all to those who had passed.
