A Woman's Tale (Australia 1991) - starring Sheila Florance of Prisoner Cell Block H fame. Half fiction and half fitting Florance's life perfectly. Tale of a woman as she reaches old age and facing the end. Touching. (vhs only)
No Surrender (British 1985) - featuring Joanne Whalley, Ray McAnally, Elvis Costello and others. Set in Liverpool on New Year's Eve. A night club, bad magician, mobsters, a new manager, a punk rock band and two sets of senior citizens, one being Catholic and the other Protestant. Fun. (vhs only)
Battle Royale (Japan 2000) - A class of middle school students picked at random, sent to a deserted island with the goal of killing each other off until just one survivor is left. Violent yes, but quite interesting. (not officially available in the states but it can be found on dvd if you look)

I also liked Everything is Illuminated, but I'm pretty sure it's American!
I also love "Cinema Paradiso" and the "Red", "White" and "Blue" trilogy I also liked "Battle Royale" a lot. I have "Women on the verge of a Nervous Breakdown" from the library now, but I haven't watched it yet. I'm a huge sucker for those bollywood movies too.
