IOW, you're not even old enough to remember how big it was when it came out. I'm 46, I remember that movie well, being 12 when it first came out. I also remember "Cocktail" making a huge star out of Bobby McFerrin the following summer, because you couldn't get away from "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

I guess it was the "Grease" of the 80's in terms of popularity.

Red Dawn
Road House
Next of Kin
Point Break

I remember when the movie came out. Saw it in theatres. What a good movie... dirty dancing was something original and lots of fun. At the time, those types of soundtracks were all the range and Dirty Dancing was unique. Even the title was cool.

“Nobody puts baby in the corner”.

***** stars.

He made two films that many of his gay fans adore: Point Break (the film that launched a thousand slash fan fictions and slash drawings) and To Wong Foo: Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar Most every other film he did was typical eighties alpha-male type action films with cardboard-thin female characters that wouldn't even qualify as cameos. Those movies were made by and for men.
Ghost and DD were full-on romantic fantasies that at least tried to have substantial female roles. This and the fact that they both objectified the male form in a way that movies usually do to the female form connected with a huge audience, turning them in the biggest box office hits of his career.

I don't think that it can be overstated how big this movie was, along with its soundtrack, which had a follow up soundtrack and there was a music tour as well. It as huge well into 1988.

Yup, I had a copy of both soundtracks on cassette.

And how many proms used "I've Had the Time of My Life" as the theme song? One of my brothers was Class of '88 and his class used that song for their Senior Prom.

Probably. I was only 3 going on 4 when Grease came out in 1978. I actually remember the music from Saturday Night Fever better from hearing it on the radio.

I think it is because of the iconic song, and that it is a romantic, coming of age movie. Nostalgia for simpler times, too.

I compare it to Flashdance, a girl power movie way before girl power was cool. It also has a great song and a breathtaking dance scene.

I haven’t read all the comments, but Dirty Dancing was considered to be a junk movie when it was made, and it almost didnt get released. The company that made it was totally surprised that it didn’t flop.

The whole thing was baby boomer propaganda appealing to all the old bags. That whole doo wop nonsense and rich long island folk on vacation. Overrated garbage!
