It's really not that great. People went crazy for it because the director inserted hundreds of individual frames of a couple having sex throughout the movie. The conscious mind can't pick them up, but by the end of the movie your subconscious mind has watched 20 minutes of first-class porn. The people who just thought it was "okay" don't like sex.
Well, not EVERY female. I'm female.and I would only give it a C+. However, I was about 33 when the movie was released, so maybe I was just too critical. (I also LOVED the movie "Love Story" which was one of the biggest hits when I was 16, and now I watch it an just cringe at the screenplay and acting, which are the two reasons I give "Dirty Dancing" a relatively low score.
I absolutely HATED both the screenplay and the acting in the movie -- the acting completely fake and overdone, imo -- even the usually wonderful Jerry Orbach was horrible in it, imo; and the story was just completely unbelievable to me. However, as a nostalgia piece, it was okay, and I very much liked the soundtrack and cinematography.
But, of course, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, and there are very few movies in which everyone would give either a very high or a very low grade.
Well my friend said that the reason why women love this movie is because it's the ultimate female fantasy movie, if she is right on that...
It's such a classic in people's eyes, especially my friends. Three of my friends say it's one of their top favorite movies, of all time, if not their most favorite movie ever. But why exactly?
I mean it's not a bad movie by any means, but it's in no way perfect I don't think. I think it suffers from some structure problems.
So what is about this movie that is has become such a classic?
Well. First of all, there's something about Patrick Swayze...
Next, it was just such a sweet, different kind of movie.
Finally, I am with you. When everyone was gushing about it in the beginning, I was like, "Whatever." But the more I paid attention to it, I started to get its charm.
So I take it you're under the impression that it was primarily guys who bought 125 million copies of 50 shades of Grey?
No that was most definitely a chick flick. If it were porn aimed at men it would have failed miserably as there are way too many words in it. It’s really not porn at all, you don’t see anything like in actual porn. That’s precisely why women liked it who might otherwise be turned off by porn.
If there wasn’t a love story involved, if it were simply that guy having the exact same sex but with random women he picked up for the night, women would have hated it and men might have liked it.
Yes you’re right! Country dance bars with mechanical bulls cropped up in even the most urbane cities!
John Travolta was really a trendsetter, though probably more a media creation. The fact is that in those days nearly everyone saw the same movies or television shows. We had a collective experience which was so great. Now there is simply too many choices and we never get a collective experience that brings everyone together on at least that one thing. You hear about Game of Thrones, but dig into the numbers and it’s not that many people who watch it. Breaking Bad, same thing, as is This Is Us or any of the Network shows.
I think of how so many people of my generation watched Melrose Place or Friends or Seinfeld and discussed it around the water cooler so to speak (we didn’t have one at my work lol). Now we can blog about it with strangers, but it’s not nearly as social. Back then we would have friends come over and we’d watch those shows together. It was social and interactive, and a lot of fun. I hope people still do this today, but no one I know does this anymore.

Am I right in saying that “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” were the only worthwhile movies Patrick Swayze made, and the only ones his female fans care about?
