I saw the movie last week. At the end everyone in the theater just sat there looking around like what just happened.
I've been following the MCU since the first Thor came out, and even been to a few conventions where Kevin Fiege was releasing the upcoming films after Avengers did so well at the BO, and back then, he had Avengers Infinity War part one and part two, so I knew this movie would end in a cliffhanger.
It will be interesting to see just how well Infinity War does in China. It's expected to break records. If that happens, it's totals could be through the roof and record breaking. Stay tuned..........
And it was three years before we got a resolution to that one.
Here is the BIG difference though ...
With INFINITY WAR, we all know it's going to be okay. Marvel has already announced BLACK PANTHER 2, SPIDEY 2, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3, etc. So we know that all those characters who "died" in INFINITY WAR are going to be okay. If anyone thinks otherwise, I have a bridge to sell them.
With EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, not only did the good guys get their arses kicked, but Han Solo may have died and Luke may have the most evil father in the galaxy, and we had no idea how that was going to resolve. It was the subject of playground conversation for three years. And for the record, general consensus was Han would be okay. Why would they be going after him otherwise? And Vader was obviously lying. No way could that be true. That would be like the Duke Boys discovering Boss Hogg was their daddy or that Barney Hiller was actually Steve Austin's long-lost brother.

Still nowhere near as bad as Dar and Kiri doing the horizontal waltz and later discovering they're brother and sister and acting like nothing weird ever happened. "MAAX!!!"

Exactly....even if the Marvel projects hadn’t already been announced, given the success (billions in the case of BP) it was obvious that there was no way the events around those characters are permanent. Marvel isn't going to throw away billions of dollars from future films.

OTOH, this is a regurgitation of a fairly old comic story, so people already knew the lost would be revived.
Unless Fiege holds a press conference and says, "Hey, you know that stuff we've been saying about future movies? Psych! Bwaahaahaaa!"
