The Wonder Woman/Superman are American icons argument is really getting old. Mainly it is brought up by people who don't understand comic book history.

Wonder Woman, Superman, Captain America and other comic book characters were created in the late 30's and early 40's as American propaganda pieces which was common for many forms of media during WWII. This isn't a bad thing as it was but once the war ended and when the 1960's came around having these characters with this ultra patriotic fervor would not age well so it became time to downplay that and play up other aspects of their characters.

Look at the Marvel comics characters created in the 1960's. Look at Thor, he like Wonder Woman has his background in norse mythology just like Wonder Woman has her background in Greek Mythology but why isn't Thor looked upon as an American icon by some like Wonder Woman? Let me guess, because he wasn't created for propaganda purposes. He was created in the 1960's where there was a different attitude towards patriotism and is Wonder Woman or Superman were created in the same time period than they would not be presented as American icons.

Captain America existence has to revolve around a patriotic theme because it's in his name and he is actually an human being born in America and even his stance on what American values mean has changed with the time.

GM and Ford are global companies just like Warner Bros, Disney, Universal etc.

GM and Ford get heavily criticized for not building cars and trucks in the U.S. and the reason why people complain is because they are considered to be American companies.
No. you overestimate the importance of this topic. Most other people really aren't giving this that much thought.

And GM and Ford building products in other countries is divisive. There are some people that understand why they build plants and cars in other countries. People may talk a good game about American made products and services but at the end of day they want quality at the right price regardless of where it comes from.

Do foreigners even know about or read American comics?

I'm pretty sure that they do.
Some of these properties have been around for fifty+ years.
Lots of opportunities for them to circulate in other countries.

Heck, the TV shows "Arrow," "Flash" and "Agents of Shield" air on TV in the UK.

And...

"Created in partnership with iVerse, Marvel Global Comics offers single issues and collected editions of Marvel titles in 12 different languages, including Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Russian and Hebrew. The deal is described by both parties as a "multiyear agreement.""

Not that that makes a difference. It just makes a king-size bed instead of a double bed.

Star Wars has always been shot mostly overseas, and mostly in the UK. Wonder Woman was shot totally in Europe, mostly in the UK. There really isn't any rationale for insisting that either should have had an all-American case.

I'll give the point for "Selma."

STAR WARS was written and directed by an American, yes. The three principal actors were Americans, but they were NOT playing Americans. They were playing folks in a galaxy far, far away. And the movie was filmed in England and Tunisia and Mexico. The rest of the cast was largely British. Declaring that all STAR WARS leads must henceforth and forever be played by Americans is silly in the extreme.

Wonder Woman too was created by Americans, and she put in a red-white-and-blue bathing suit because, I guess, it helped turn on the GIs and little boys. But the character herself is not an American. She's an Amazon, which has its roots in Greek mythology. I see no reason at all that Diana must be played by an American, and I see many reasons why she should not.

But really, this whole premise is silly. The performing arts are all about performing, not reality. You choose the best person for the role. Period. That's it.

The problem with your premise is that "American movies" now make a great deal of their money from overseas distribution. There is nothing inherently American about "Star Wars". In fact, it takes place "in a galaxy far, far away".

And they can continue to make money with an American cast.

Are you for real? Is this a troll or are you seriously suggesting ethnic cleansing for tv/films?

I'm speechless if this idiocy is real, like we are an island that needs pure national entertainment. Seems to me that a guy tried this in Germany starting in the 1930's as well... how did that turn out?
