The first Star Wars(1977) release is currently 3rd top selling, only behind Avatar(2nd), and Gone with the Wind(1st).
The thing to keep in mind: Gone with the Wind came out in an era when most homes did not have TVs and most towns' local movie houses were packed to the gills on weekends and had healthy crowds most weeknights. And ticket prices were more affordable to average Joe and Jane.
I still do not understand the popularity of AVATAR. I found it a thoroughly mediocre movie from start to finish.

When I was young, Star Wars was kind of nerdy but in a cool culturally prominent way. Now... its a geek fest and I feel sorry for this generation that wants to cling to it to help give themselves an identity and feel relevant. But they have no idea just how lame and creatively vacant the whole franchise has become. Its a huge soulless production of warmed over stale ideas and plots with extremely insipid actors trying to portray would be iconic characters. And the only way they can get them out from under the shadow of the original movies is to kill off the original actors or despoil them in unforgivable ways.

Yup. I am old enough to remember the days when the whole town went to the movies on the weekend. Favorites would rotate. You'd go see STAR WARS or JAWS or CLOSE ENCOUNTERS every few months, if not at the local theater then on the edge of town at the drive-in. When I was a kid, Saturday nights at the theater was shoulder-to-shoulder packed, no matter what was playing. I remember sitting in the aisle to watch EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE.

Haha! Or how about when Return of the Jedi came out, and you had to wait in a long line that wrapped around the single theater in your city for the next showing, because you arrived to late for the one you wanted to get into?

But even your run-of-the mill releases that no one remembers any more would have lines out to the parking lot, because going to the movies was just what people did on the weekends. I stood in line to see THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA.

Also remember the long lines for Return of the Jedi at the theaters. That is still my favorite Star Wars movie.
