What are some good sci-fi movies? My tastes run more towards understated movies that make you think. Not a fan of "sci-fi" which are really more action-adventure movies.

My all-time favorite sci-fi movie: Gattaca
Others I like: Serenity, The Matrix (the first one), City of Lost Children, Equilibrium, Contact, Dark City, Pitch Black, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

Movies I dislike: Matrix II and III, Star Wars, I, Robot, War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four, etc.

So any suggestions based on my likes and dislikes?

I'm a huge fan of sci-fi fiction novels and movies.

One of my favourites is "Blade Runner." (1982). Subtle, perhaps, but certainly verging on the possible.

"2001-Space Odyssey, an early large screen, and one that had some terrific sci-fi/philosophy moments (book by Arthur Clarke).

"Logan's Run" (also older) and like Blade Runner, could happen if we push the envelop.

How could I have forgotten Blade Runner as one of my likes!? Saw 2001 about 15 years ago -- for some reason it just didn't get to me -- will have to watch it again.

Need to check out Logan's Run. Thanks.

Artificial Intelligence was a strange Sci-Fi but really good and Close Encounters of the Third Kind is also a great.

FAHRENHEIT 451 was a good one; also old.

And I really enjoyed the film version of "Handmaiden's Tale." An excellent book, too.

Based on your list I'm guessing you've seen this and forgot to list it, but if you haven't....

Total Recall is right up your alley I think.

War of the Worlds the 1953 and 2005 versions are both good-I prefer the 1953 version. It Came from Beneath the Sea (1953)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) The Time Machine (1960) '2001' Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) On the Beach (1959-Post apocalyptic) the 2000 version is good also. The Day of the Triffids (1963) Terminator 1984
