I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original Godzilla (1954)

Also, a little-known sci-fi trilogy from Ivan Tors is The Magnetic Monster (1953), Riders To The Stars(1954), and Gog (1954) - neat to see how they thought "science" would take us in the near future.

What about The Man Who Fell to Earth (David Bowie)? Should make you think.

Stargate? (The first one)

You've mentioned most of my suggestions and Logan's Run was also mentioned. Let me add...STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE...though replete with special effects, the movie makes you think about what life/consciousness really entails; as well as the true meaning of God/Gods and religion. Also it makes you think of evolution and it's ramifications and how everything is actually "realitive" to your timeframe/mindset.

For a Science Fiction TV saga, that spans 5 years to tell a COMPLETE storyline; I suggest watching BABYLON 5; a truly outstanding masterpiece...IMHO. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5

I just got through watching one with Cuba Gooding Jr. It's not far fetched. It worth a look-see. It's called "Hardwired".

I think you would like "The Quiet Earth" (1985)

The original version of 'The Andromeda Strain' (1970), directed by the legendary Robert Wise, whose resume also includes Best Picture Oscar winners 'The Sound Of Music' & 'West Side Story', as well as 'I Want To Live', for which Susan Hayward won an Oscar for Best Actress.
