Aren't there supposed to be plagues of frogs and such? This morning the dogs killed a rat in the kennel. Problem is, there are no rats in this valley. Where did it come from? Probably the same dimension as Elk's rattlers!!

Or maybe it's a spelling error. Rat, Rattler, not all THAT much difference...

I killed another one. Does anybody else see this problem???? I've killed 3 rattlesnakes in 2 days. I haven't killed 3 rattlesnakes in 10 years. Is this the new trend? I'm hoping it is. Let them California Yuppies come out with their shovels. They'll prolly call a bug exterminator.
Well all that water is giving them an eviction notice. I am not seeing as many prairie dogs and I think they are being flooded out.
Sitting here riding out a nasty thunderstorm. Got my flashlight ready.

I figured there'd be lots of snakes and such coming out of the wood work after all this high water. Damn, now I'll have to really watch where I walk. Problem is I can't see if I don't wear my glasses...hubby says "you'll hear'em" I think he wants me to get bit

Trouble with hearing 'em is you can't always tell where they are, which is how I stepped right on one last year... amazing how high a 55YO redneck can jump. If they're really rattling fullbore, it doesn't sound like a rattle, it sounds like steam under high pressure escaping from a leaky pipe, and the sound seems to come from everywhere at once.

Rattle snakes suck. I wish that I had some "Off" to repel them. But baring no repelent, I guess I have to live with it.

Here's an article on snake repellent, seems it's mostly made of snake oil...
Do Snake Repellents Work?

Next place down the way has a snake fence around the pool, it's just 2 foot high corrugated metal with no openings except one close-fitting gate. In my experience, rattlers don't climb very far and are not athletic, so I imagine it works to keep them out. Gopher snakes climb like monkeys (we once found two big ones tangled up in the swamp cooler, 3 feet off the ground), tho there's no real need to keep them out... maybe the reverse, since supposedly they eat rattlers.

Good site on snakes in Iowa, I imagine a lot of their cousins get as far as eastern MT:

Well, look at it this way: We could be living in a state, cough/cough, that has a LOT of two legged snakes ie: politicians and groups that hug... :-) I like taking my chances here in the wide open spaces and lots of elbow room

Coffee's on.

Great day in the neighborhood. As of yesterday afternoon, the river is within it's banks, so today starts the drying out.

Back on the 7th of June, the boys at NOAA (I speak with them almost daily) told me that they say the flooding lasting into the first week of July. They were absolutely correct.

I can't believe I've been wading in water for a full month. We're talking wading in water just to get to my vehicles. Wading in water to feed horses. Although I had towns, it was worth going to town just so my boots woud dry out. hahahaha

Don't forget, coffee's on, somebody needs to bring some bear sign.
