America's first statue commemorating literary characters is the Tom & Huck statue erected in 1926 in Hannibal, Missouri.

Glacial Erratics

About a million years ago, four great sheets of ice spread in successive waves southward from the Arctic region. The last wave ended c. 15,000 to 10,000 B.C. Two of them, the Nebraskan and Kansas glaciers, are known to have reached the Missouri River and further south in some isolated areas (Mastodon State Park). Ranging from 100 to 1000 feet thick, these glaciers ground northern Missouri into today's topography of gently rolling prairies and wide shallow valleys. After retreating, they left behind rich drift soil and sometimes strangely isolated boulders called glacier erratics that vary in composition according to their origins.

Underground railroads? Interesting!

Now that's news I can put ta use. Excellent - I don't think I would've guessed such a thing for Missouri - but there are many, many farms visible here. Not so much right here in the KC Metro, but, the state, yes.

^^^^^ Yeah, with all the lakes, rivers and woods, I wouldn't have guessed Missouri that high on the list for farms. That just shows how big this state is.

John Rollin Ridge (1827-1867)
b. Georgia
He was a member of the Treaty Party of Cherokees. The party provided for the removal of the Cherokees from the South to Indian Territory. In 1839, he saw his father assassinated by members of the opposing party of Cherokees. Ten years later he killed a man in a horse dispute who he thought took part in the assassination of his father. He fled to southern Missouri and settled for about a year where he talked about a plan for an armed invasion of the Cherokee Nation. He ended up going to the California gold fields with some other Cherokee where he became a newspaper writer and poet. Much of his writings were on American Indians and their need to be civilized and to assimilate into white society.

URANIUM RUSH

This " Atomic Geiger Counter " was produced by the Bell Products Company of 4251 Forest Park Avenue, St.Louis Missouri, probably in the 1950s. Quoting the Instructions, " The Atomic Geiger Counter is a toy, and is completely safe. It does not detect uranium or any other radioactive ore. However, it is an educational toy which familiarizes the child (and the parent) with certain basic ideas and procedures of real uranium prospecting, by simulating radioactivity detection."
