CIRCUS TRAGEDIES

In 1870, a traveling circus called the James Robinson & Company Circus decided to drum up some publicity for their upcoming show in Middleton, Missouri, by having their band and some lions give a sneak peek performance during the parade through town. Despite being warned not to,for multiple reasons, the band decided to sit on top of the huge lion cage during the parade. The roof of the cage didn't support the weight of the 10 band members and they fell through. Seven of them were mauled to death as horrified parade-goers watched.

William Harrington, an equestrian and native of Boston, died at Milledgeville, Georgia, Nov. 4, 1835, at the age of 31. Some time previous to his death he was in St.Louis with Rockwell's Circus, and after falling from his horse on a couple of occasions was considered deranged. While in St.Louis he made several attempts to kill himself by discharging a revolver through his left cheek. He then shot himself in the head and ran into the entry of the Hotel with blood streaming down his face. When some friends attempted to stop him he fired a shot in their direction. He then invited a friend to come and watch him shoot himself and sat down on a pile of wood and deliberately lodged a ball into his brain.

In 1858, James McFarland, attached to the Spalding & Rogers Circus Company, met with his death in western Missouri at the hands of Mr.Roberts, landlord of the hotel in Liberty. McFarland's wife, who was with a rival circus company was staying at the hotel and gave Mr.Roberts instructions that she did not want any visitors. When McFarland learned his wife was staying there he demanded permission to see her. The landlord refused and McFarland drew his pistol and headed up the stairs. Mr. Roberts grabbed a Bowie knife and stabbed McFarland in the neck. He died 3 minutes later.

He then invested his remaining money as a silent, half-owner of a saloon. He went back to New York to marry Eva Caten in 1884 and returned with her to Kansas City. She was not happy with saloon life or his sketches and left him. He soon began making money with his sketches and reunited with his wife in New York.
